I've been listening to some Joe Boyd podcasts of late. He's full of surprises. I expected these podcasts (of a radio show he did for a London station) to be all Mongolian nose flute, Mississippi John Hurt and The Incredible String Band, but Boyd's got so much more breadth than that. I start up one of these podcasts today and who does he start talking about? George Harrison.
And he kicks the action off with a very early Beatles recording. A song named "Boys". My understanding is that it was recorded live in the studio.
WOW!
I remember years ago John Lennon said the Beatles first got popular because they were the best Rock 'n Roll band in the world. He might have been onto something. The energy, the excitement, the sheer thrill damn it, of that track is ... well it's thrilling. It has a real spark to it, and they were a really, really tight band.
The great songs came later, but there's a real electricity to those early Beatles recordings isn't there? (I should point out right now that this stuff isn't really my generation, I'm just a few years on the young side ?) You can hear it on tracks like "Please Please Me" and "Twist and Shout" (with John's fab lead vocal).
They really had a lot going for them. An instinctive grasp of melody and dynamics, and great cohesion as a band.

i've seen some early footage of these guys going at it, singing those early songs, i'm sure lots of us probably have. little wonder the girls went nutso over them! for me, john had a presence that even still reaches out through a black and white, decades-old kodachrome 18mm camera, grabs you this side of the millenium and says 'wotcher. let's play some.'
it's true rock 'n roll. and it still moves me.
(i think they were 18mm, not sure. and it was probably measured in inches...) :-[

My Beatles education was the 'Help' movie, saw it many times, sang along to all the songs as a little pikkie. Saw another one as well, but help stuck with me.

Wa ha, I also just youtubed that, as I'd never heard that song. The incessant shrieking in the background is quite something, but they do put on a good show. Love it when George realises the camera is on him.

Early Beatles...1963...This Boy...one of my favs ...great harmonies
Bob-Dubery
My favourite piece of Beatle's harmonic magic comes in one of their early hits "She Loves You". And it comes on the 4th. The 4th "yeah" of "yeah yeah yeah yeah". Instinctive magic as well, not a case of George Martin scattering some sophisticated fairy dust on proceedings.
It's a naff song - though very good of it it's type - but the performance is, well, fab. Crackles with electricity, full of clever harmonic details and it shows the vocal punch the mop tops could pack.

Indeed !...there's also a very clever guitar riff in that song.
