Dilemma

What would you do? It could be here. It could be on another guitar or music forum. It could be on a luthier forum. It could be on a golfing forum. But you've seen someone advertising something and someone else expresses interest. Now, you've actually purchased or seen the exact same product brand new at a price less than being advertised on the forum in question. What do you do? Do you tell the soul who is interested that the item can be got cheaper elsewhere? Do you say "let it happen, so be it". BTW I've put the same post in another forum or two and the population seems to think advise the victim discreetly ie. not publicly, which is pretty much what we've agreed on here before init ie. no public discussion?

i think it should be said openly if the seller is asking to much, he may have a good reason why he is, and forgot to mention it.

i could advertise my MIM strat for R17,000

you openly state - "dude, they sell for R7,999 brand new...'

then me : ' oh hell, sorry, forgot to mention all hardware is solid gold"...

i think thats far better than everyone left thinking the seller is trying a fast one.

I'd say if you're going to contact the buyer that is interested, you should contact the seller too. I think it's only fair that the seller knows that what he is selling is above the normal price. The buyer deserves to know too. So, I would say send them both the same mail and tell them they should negotiate the price considering the cost of a new one.

I presume you are referring to private sellers and not stores.....Some people just don't bother to do some research beforehand....so let them pay the price so to speak....so I'm inclined to say.."let it be"....one also has to keep the seller in mind as well.

I think I have seen both overpriced and underpriced stuff for sale on our classifieds. Never dared to comment iIrc.
If you were to tell a potential buyer, he would firstly have to show interest in the thread and secondly not be faster than you can type. I mean if he says 'pm sent', are you still going to pm him? And the second oke?

I only recently joined, and I've found dealing with members of this forum to be a pleasant experience, it is a community of sorts. If some guy arrives and tries to sell a item at an inflated price, as in rip off, I'd appreciate input from other members if I where interested in said product, and I'd feel obliged to other members. I've seen some 'members' join it seems for the purpose of selling and item or finding a guitarist, easy to spot. We've all seen crappy used pedals on gumtree at an asking price of double their value.

Basically forum rules say you can't raise it in the thread. You can however, PM the seller to say you think it's overpriced and why. You can also PM the potential buyer, if you are so inclined.

People should learn to be more careful when purchasing products. Do more research.

There are rules on the forum. In real life (this thing I've been hearing about lately) I might do it differently.

Say Ray comes to me and he tells me he's got a great price on this Trem-O-Blaster that he's wanted for so long - R1299. Say I know that he can get it significantly cheaper at Brent's Fine GAS Supplies. I might direct him to Brent's, or, more likely, I'd say something like "well maybe you want to shop around and check price's elsewhere." If Ray asks me if I actually know an alternate supplier at a better price then I would mention Brent's.

That's for a physical object with a brand name on it, not a service. A service is harder to quantify. Now the conversation might go

Ray: My axe needs a setup. X-Rated Guitars are advertising R75 for a full set up while you wait.
Me: Maybe you should call Alan's Guitar Emporium.
Ray: He's quoting R350!
Me: You get what you pay for.
