I am doing my master's in biomedical image processing and I hope to use optimization techniques such as neural nets to create a learning algorithm able to detect tuberculosis, cancer and silicosis among other things by analysis of digital chest x-rays, particularly from the mining sectors. The ideal solution will also be able to create predictive modeling and be interactive with the radiographer.

Being that I studied grease-monkey-science (erm, mechanical engineering) I could do with some ideas from people more in tune with the fine art of numerical solutions etc.

So it would be awesome to have some people to chat to about this stuff 8)

I have a friend whos doing Mech Eng at the moment hoping to go into Biomedical Engineering, would that be quite different from what you're doing or is what she wants to do a separate course altogether?

PS if mech eng is grease-monkey-science, what is Chem Eng, mad-science?

Damn but that sounds cool?! And seriously interesting too! I wouldn't call myself a maths boffin, but I'm a huge enthusiast... (I've been known to read Penrose's 'Ultimate Guide' for sheer entertaintment purposes, but don't tell anyone I said that... hehe) ezietsman is your guy though...
