I would like to continue on the openness with the following idea... ... As I listened to the Emotional Compositions of the last challenge I could always see some picture or scenario that was triggered by the songs. I could see Dr. Gray from Grey's anatomy crying after losing a patient while some of your songs were playing in the background or Michael Scofield on Prison Break planning something while listening to our compositions. And as we all know music plays a huge role in setting the atmosphere for certain occasions... SO for this month’s challenge, you have to first create a visual scenario for us to imagine in our heads, and then create a musical piece that would set the mood for that. Basically your entry has to be accompanied by text to create the scenario. Here are a few examples of scenarios (you can use them if you want or create your own): 1) Grant is a 25 year old bachelor that visited Vegas to get drunk and gamble out all of his money because he hardly had money left in the first place. He neither had hope or confidence left... But then things started to change. He got lucky in the Casino and won $20 mil. He is driving his beat up Dodge pickup, cruising down the highway, knowing he has a new beginning and he is ready to take the world by storm. 2) David and his wife Rebecca were trying to have a kid for 10 years and after they realised that they were getting old, they decided to apply for adoption. They became the foster parents of Caylee, a beautiful 5 year old girl with brown hair and the biggest brown eyes you have ever seen. Two weeks before Caylee's 7th birthday the couple was severely traumatised after Caylee was only given 1 month to live after being diagnosed with leukaemia. After many treatments Caylee passed away and the couple was devastated when the doctor gave them the news in the waiting area of the hospital. Closing Date is 23:59:59 Wed 25 May 2011

Squonk you make most sense.

It's not about rules and competition etc, it's surely about the spirit of this whole thing. We could never enforce this is in an actual rule but we can all do our bit to promote this spirit. And I guess the guidance in the Rules could be written to steer new comers down this path and further promote it.

I still need to submit. Came out very 80s sounding in the end. But as I am going for the Vegas theme I am hoping it kind of fits. Hey ho, it was still a whole dollop of fun coming up with and putting together!!

Agreed...but just because something hasn't been knocked up in the last 7 days does not mean that it don't have spirit, surely?

It's all down to you. If you think your recording best captures what you are trying to say with regards to this months theme/s then that is all that counts. And this is well within the spirit of the competition. And I am more than happy with that. Happier than larry in fact.

But I do think the 1 min rule should be witheld though.

No - not from what I have seen. But it is frowned upon. Your chances of winning may be drastically dropped.

The motivation behind the time constraint is to keep the size of the files down.

I interpret that rule as "closer to one minute than to two minutes".

I also like the challenge of getting things down to that time limit. It's like a haiku or a sonnet. You have so many syllables in which to say whatever it is that you want to say, so you have to distill things down to the essentials.

I pulled my clip because of it being too long. {And it is too long because of some un-necessary repetition which must be clipped anyway} .

I've pulled an entry before because it didn't meet requirements. IMO that's what you should do if you believe that you're not complying with the challenge and/or the general rules for competition entries.

If you do pull your entry you can always make it available via the clips to review board. That way you get the feedback and it doesn't muddy the competition waters.

An expectant world (OK... Squonk and his dogs) still got to hear that clip.

Personally I applaud Hammeron for the voluntary withdrawl of her entry. It's what I believe you should do if you realise that you're not sticking within the rules or meeting the specific challenge. In my case I had misunderstood the challenge that had been posed - It required specific chords in a specific sequence. I had the chords, but not the sequence, so what else could I do?

I agree with PeteM that the real "victory" is the personal satisfaction, but I do think too that we should all make an attempt to stick to the rules and to the specifics of the challenge. If the rules are unsatisfactory they can be amended, but just disregarding them opens up the door to anybody disregarding any rule for any reason or for no good reason.

Hats off to Hammeron!

Not that I don't want her to enter, but I think her attitude here in taking the pains and the personal responsibility to meet the rules is to be admired.

I still think the only way you can force new recordings and compositions are to get more complex topics... Like what I said before. An example being, Incorporate "this" melody into any song with any chords . (like the well known Nokia tune or what ever) ...

But that would result in less people entering the challenges...

And speaking off... IT'S A CHALLENGE NOT A COMPETITION... No cash prize, No medal, No tap on the back even... So the idea is to challenge yourself and your creative thinking. And forcing you to enhance your recording skills and improving general musical skills!!!
