Some of the step-by-step pics:
After removing the original coat - a total mission and much frustration, made a bit easier with the use of an orbital sander - I got it down nice and smooth and sprayed it with a white base coat. I then did the first coat of light grey:
I'd then spent ages drawing 'digital camo' shapes on blue painters tape stretched out and overlapped across a pane of glass. I cut them out and placed them all over the guitar - If I could go back I would have put more shapes on as the final guitar is a lot 'blacker' than I had originally intended. Also, if I do this again I may not go with the painters tape again - it was a bit too... brittle? Put it this way, it was hard to keep the right angles and it tore quite a bit. Not too sure whether insulation tape would stick too well, but I think that would have maybe been a better option.
I then sprayed it with a darker shade of grey, repeated the process and sprayed with a matte black:
And after a couple of clear matte coats this is what I was left with while I waited for my parts to arrive from overseas:
Its not perfect, and I should have wet sanded between the coats to remove the slight differences in heights between the different coloured coats, but I reckon that this guitar will end up being my 'play' guitar - I'll leave it like this for a few months then do something else with it!
