Buddy Holly is one of the greatest pop song-writers of all time. The man was an effing genius. You've just got to hear the stuff that was released after his death. They dolled it up with '50s popisms (lots of male harmony vocals, strings and other rubbish) but you hear what he laid down on a tape-recorder in his apartment in NYC and it blows your freakin' mind. He was at his absolute creative peak.

Norman86, a lot of people imagine because Buddy Holly played that way that it was all he could play. He was a very canny pop performer. When he started using stratocasters to set himself apart (he started performing with a '52 Les Paul), he realised that these jangly rhythm solos were a huge hit. So he made them his thing. He could do a lot of rockabilly picking.

But yeah. Buddy Holly is great practise for your chord changes. Try the solo in Peggy Sue for example. If you can play that, you've pretty much mastered your "cowboy" chords.

I remember getting all misty eyed seeing something on the net about a guitar guy asked to clean up and fix Buddy's last guitar. When he took the pickguard off he found one of Buddy's plectrums in there - it had clearly slipped under after being stuck in there as a spare. He went way to soon.

Whoa. That is the ultimate rock fan's video.

Loved Keidis as Glen Danzig, Flea as Bootsy, and John Frusciante looked just uncannily like John Lennon right at the end there.

Also I never noticed how sweet the fuzz tone on the solo of that song is.
