Was this a wasted weekend guitar-wise???

So last week I had very high hopes in putting in some good playing time etc this easter weekend. And guess what? it is Monday afternoon and I have not even picked up my guitar. Seems the moment I want to play something comes up, have to drive there, mow the lawn and after all that I am not in the mood now...guess its what is called life. Anyone else had the same expectations/experience ?

Well I'm a bit confused as to where the weekend started and stopped. Right now I'm not even sure what day of the week it is, so I might be going beyond the bounds of the question here

But

For some time now I've been trying to develop a roll across the strings with the right hand. I've tried intermittently, but I've found it difficult because nobody seems to be able to demonstrate the thing or break it down into smaller elements that you can start stitching together. They all say "you just sort of go like this...." though it could be that I've overcomplicated the thing. I'm not too dismayed by the absence of this technique from my armoury - better players than me have struggled with it.

I should take up the banjo. This kind of thing seems quite fundamental to banjo playing and the good banjo players can just reel these things off all day long - backwards, sideways and upside down.

Anyway... to make a short story long, I've been working on a couple of songs. I'm bored with the one, and I've decided that I don't like the other, but they're good vehicles for practice and development as I can hear in my head arrangements and possibilities for those songs that I can't actually execute, but they're not the sort of untouchable thing I hear in my head sometimes where the gulf between what I know is possible and what I know I can play is massive. In these two cases the gulf is a gulf but not too wide.

Anyhoo... one of these songs (the one which I'm bored with, not the song itself, which is fab, but my rendition of it) is Loudon Wainwright III's "Men" (gotta love these snappy titles). I need to get two instrumental breaks into that (this is fingerpicked, solo stuff). I was messing around with various possibilities for the break that will, in my arrangement, conclude the song and whoom! Out of nowhere comes this right hand roll. I nearly fell off my seat.

At least I caught the moment. So I regained my composure and played that break through about 20 times to try to get that roll into my muscle memory.

Next afternoon I tried it again. Oops! Where's it gone. Then after a few attempts I got it going again.

So, not that fast at the moment, not as fast as I want it to be, but smooth and generally I find that once you've got it going slowly but smoothly the speed will come with practice and repetition.

So for me it was looking like it was going to be a waste, and then suddenly this little breakthrough.

I got about 8 hours of practice time in...............and that was only when my wife went to her mom with the kids........
