oook. I've been playing for about 9 months, I know some (very) basic theory (what is a scale, chord etc).
I'm currently working on building up speed and shred technique, since that's what I mostly listen to.
Now, I am currently just a 'guitar player', meaning, I just play other peoples stuff, I want to progress, get the creative juices flowing... I take it, that creating your own music on guitar can basically boilled down to learning scales, and playing around on the fretboard until it sounds nice...no? Or is there some great secret I am unaware of? Any theory I can learn to help along the way...?
I'm at a dead end, don't really even know what I'm asking...HELP! ☹

Try reading all Satriani's post. Will really help with extra thoery. And ideas for song writing. The more you know the more you can compose.

Jethro, I've been there. What I started doing was recording myself. I now actually have a song. Sure it's not an amazing song but I feel like more than just a player. Keep recording yourself until you evolve into a song-writer. I think that's the next step.

Oh and I specifically mean, record yourself making shit up. Not just doing covers. Something good will come of it, eventually.

@Wessel Just cleared up reading most of em, good info, I actually understand what he says \o/
@Norio Good idea, I've got tons of video documentation of my progress doing covers/riffs (keeps me motivated seein how much I used to suck), but haven't recorded myself messing around, so I never actually know if what I'm doing sounds good -_-
Oh yes, I just discovered Joe Satriani, "Super Collossal" album...I've been looking for music like this for a long time, I think this is going to serve as a nice pool of insparation, just wish I had more of him...my god this is awesome...

Jethro, Satch kicks ass. You're onto a good thing there ?
Try pick up a G3 DVD for some major inspiration. Just be careful that it doesn't make you drop the guitar entirely. It almost did that for me but then I remembered why I started playing and it wasn't to be the best!
