So I've finally decided who I really want to see live

Dingwall

A different slant to this thread:

I often record music programs off Sky Arts which has some good things on occasion. Anyway I recorded a live concert of ZPZ recently and was very impressed. So I have been going on and on about it to my wife. And then the other day she surprised me by discovering that he is playing live in my local theatre in November and I now have 2 tickets! At first she thought that it would be a nice coupley thing to do but just one YouTube video later she realised, with a look of horror on her face, the error of her ways, and pulled out. So I happen to have a spare ticket......any takers?

ZPZ is a lot more genteel than the original FZ shows. It's shit hot music well performed (if a little looser than the originals), well worth seeing, so try persuade the wife. I'd kill to see them, but the cost of the flight means it's not gonna happen...

Thanks for that clip, I haven't seen that version of Cheepnis before. Here's another of ZPZ - with a surprise guest that guitarists may recognise:

Sadly I don't think Mr Stevie will be at the Basingstoke show! (altho stranger things have happened!)

Silly question, But does the Zappa plays Zappa have anything to do with Dweezil? I see that Vai is involved.
{My connection wont let me see the vids}

AlanRatcliffe

Yes - it's Dweezil playing Frank's music. Usually with some ex-Zappa band members (Napoleon Murphy Brock seems to be a mainstay) and a bunch of other hot musos. He actually does it quite well, although lacks his father's ability to reorchestrate to cater for the unique abilities of different versions of the band.

It also, at one point, had Frank's other son Ahmed on vocals didn't it?

Hammeron

Moon unit?

Hammeron

'Them or us' had a song called 'Frogs with dirty little lips'.
Aparently the lyric was inspired by Ahmed.

Frogs with dirty little lips
dirty little warts on their finger-tips
dirty n' green
tiny n' mean
floppin' around
by the edge of the stream.

Frogs withe dirty little eyes
dirty little tongues all covered with flies
dirty brown
floppin' around
puffed up n' bloated
when the sun goes down

Frogs with dirty little nose
dirty little spots all over there clothes
dirty legs
dirty feet
dirty little frogs is what you eat

AlanRatcliffe

AFAIK, the project with Ahmet and Dweezil was called Z. Ahmet might have guested with ZPZ, but he's never been a member.

Moon Unit did the Valley girl vocals in FZs Valley Girl (Ship Arriving too Late to Save a Drowning Witch). Ahmet wrote the lyrics for Frogs With Dirty Little Lips (Them or Us). Dweezil's first appearance on a FZ recording was trading riffs with Vai on Stevie's spanking (Them or Us).

Dweezil has grown impressively as a player. His early shredding was already good, but he now pretty much nails his father's unique style. Unfortunately what he lacks is FZ's innovation. That makes ZPZ a great FZ tribute band, but it lacks some of the magic, particularly the way FZ used to completely rearrange a song from night to night or even completely on the fly during a performance.

Hey you guys seem to to be much more into Zappa than I am. I have lots of respect and awe but could only be called a casual fan. So I feel bad that I have these 2 tickets! But I do know I will really appreciate it, Alan I agree that it will be like watching a shit hot function band with a dollop of original DNA. But I also agree DZ playing seems far more mature than I remember him being in the 'guitar hero' days. Actually the other guitarist also looks very good! Oh and when I was browsing I spotted a clip of Dweezil doing "eruption" - not sure if this was just his solo spot but it may suggest that they throw other little non-Z bits into their show!

Guilty as charged m'lud. ? I can go on for days...

Dweezil was inspired to pick up a guitar because of EVH, so it was a strong early influence. He was taught by Michael Angelo amongst others, used to hang around (and recorded) with bands Extreme and Winger. So the hair metal stuff is pretty much in his DNA. I'm sure having Vai, Belew and Kenealley around the house all the time didn't hurt either. ?

Z used to do a raging version of the Bee Gees Stayin' Alive and does tend to throw in odd song choices here and there, but that was a FZ trait too.

singemonkey wrote I may not have too much time. He's not a young man. And he's not the greatest guitar player. But who cares. I must make plans.

Leonard Cohen.

I still want to live on a motor car free island because of him. He is without parallel - the greatest lyricist in popular music of the last 150 years. At least. Nobody with his skills had ever considered it before as worthy of attention.

Any love for L. Cohen?

Sincerely,

S. Monkey.

+ a trillion gazillion!!

Gravitas. If you look it up in the dictionary there will probably be a picture of Mr Cohen there somewhere. ?
His early stuff was performed with skill and all that and I can see why he earned so much respect, admiration and love from both fans and critics for it, but the way he delivers it now.... It's like hearing a school teacher read a story about war out of a textbook and then hearing the same events told by a veteran who lived through the action himself.

As for hallelujah... you be the judge.

Both are brilliant versions imo. No winners, just two musos performing a great song brilliantly.

Haha. She nailed that. Didn't she go on to do some TV or something?

AlanRatcliffe

Three of FZ's four kids have done presenting, acting and voiceover work on TV. Dweezil got fired from MTV for speaking his mind about them on Howard Stern, but did quite a bit of other TV and film work (he even used a FZ line - "Don't touch that dial!" - in Running Man with Schwarzenegger).

Hammeron

Is Dweezil covering Frank.....?

Hammeron

........or is it a tribute? ?

AlanRatcliffe

Tribute. He plays FZ songs almost exclusively and gets them pretty much spot on.

Renesongs

Id like to see Jimi and Stevie Ray Alive again maybe they can Voodoo Chile (unexpected return) - hey it's Easter I can dream too ???
