This so cool. I can't understand how we never came across him back then... ☹

That's a Hank Williams song - and a lovely bit of playing.
Thats' from late '81 or early '82, when Thompson finally toured the USA in his own right (he'd last been there in '72 when he was in Sandy Denny's backing band) and effectively revived his career. The way his career went early on shows that talent and critical acclaim are never enough - though some who were around him at the time say that he was actively avoiding fame and celebrity. Even now he can walk down the street without being recognised, go to the pub or the snooker hall etc etc but he's a bit more business like about things now.
Maybe you want to explore some of the Richard and Linda Thompson albums from the 70s - but start with the early ones on the Island label.
I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight and
Pour Down Like Silver are the ones I'd recommend. But you won't find anything quite like that clip. Thompson had several covers in his live show back then - including a George Formby song.
