Need some thoughts please guys. I've been part of this little cover band, Ruby Tuesday, for somewhere around 16 months now. It has been the first and only...

don't be so sure ......... i seen cover bands consumeor lets say devour potetially awesome original musicians......... i worked a long time ago with a guitarist who was a fabulous cover band guitarist and it took him years to reach that point of "cover perfection" and yes no denying his cover music was of the best i have heard in all my travels around this world ....but soon as he decided to record a solo original album he sounded just like the artists he had been covering , he became so good at "cloning" sounds he forgot how to have a sound of his own......

so yeah cover bands are great in some ways but can kill your uniqueness .as i've said before. no one wants a hendrix/satriani/jeff beck//ect/ect clone in original market and thats why most profecient cover band muso's never make the transition successfully to being original artists .....most great original acts .start out as just that original .and in turn ussually suck at being cover band players ? ....... and yes original bands do play covers at shows but in their own style but never like the original

there's no room for individuality in a "good" cover band.........

so yes the killer of inspiration and originality comes when you start working out covers note for note.........which all great cover/tribute bands do....... and ever wonder why jazz muso's never cover songs note for note in their sets.everyone plays summertime but if you got 3 bands back to back playing summertime they will all sound different even use reharmonised chords why .cos that way it breeds originality even if it's intrincically the same song

but anyway after all tha yeah good luck with "talk" and i think if you have material thats original , just get your own band where you call the shots.. no band is ever a democricy ....... one band leader and make that you

just because someone is "original" it does not always mean they are good.....

you can be original and still be crap. if your original music does not have very wide appeal, then dont expect the masses to follow you around asking for more.

sometimes a bands success lays in them being a cover band - or tribute band.

Absolutely.

So, a tribute band would be a band that dedicates itself to copying the catalogue of another band note for note, and
a cover band would be a band that copies the songs of other different bands perhaps adding a twist here and there?

Nativity in Black is a tribute to Black sabbath with the songs "covered" by original bands that make each covered song their own - adding their own individual uniqueness to the it.

If it isnt fun anymore, time to bail. I was a manic depressive when I left my band, but just before leaving, I was just agro all the time cos of the politics and bulls*t I had to deal with.

In the end, twas a good move, started playing all the stuff I grew up loving and rediscovered the joy of jamming (which ironically seemed to become JUST ROUTINE in the band).

-I played for a band in the late 90's, on a session basis, (play it as its recorded) for 2 years. Thats as long as I could last. I made money playing gigs, but I got depressed not having a creative outlet, and the things became quite tense when I announced that I'd be doing my own band on the side. I was 'let go'.

-I'm not gonna advise anyone to be a quitter as an alarming amount of posts indicate. Reliability is a major problem in our little fishbowl of a music industry, when you do find good muso's, they are generally arrogant and unreliable. If you are a pro, then standard business ethics should apply. If the group are not sticking to the plan, and you have repeatedly addressed the issue, you should move on.

I announced my intent on Thursday night. Keyboardist was very angry. Drummer and I were having a good laugh because he was also planning to quit. Other two members didn't come through when they heard what was happening.

Keyboardist now wants to have a chat to see if we can keep things together, but my mind is made up and as far as I'm concerned it's done. However, out of respect to the guys I'll be happy to get together for a talk.

Felt like a big weight was lifted from my shoulders, so obviously was the right thing.

Thanks again, you guys gave me some extra resolve. I'm a bit of a softy with these things. ?

We actually had to do that last year. ? Even worse, he was the founder of the band ???

That's decent of you. I recall you saying that the vocalist wanted out as well. Now the drummer also has an intention to quit. That's three out of five, so it sounds like that band has run it's course (though if the "Beach Boys" can carry on...).

Anyhoo, well done! You manned up and did it properly and openly and without compromising your own dignity, and now there's a weight off of your shoulders.
