Hammeron Following on from the bass Ricks, what are the 6 strings like? Saw the George Harrison from the Beatles playing one once, yea?
singemonkey It was mostly John who played rickenbacker 6 strings. George was famous for playing a rickenbacker 12 string though which is a whole other story. Also John Foggerty of Creedence made good use of them. They have a real kind of transistor radio twang that doesn't sound like any other guitar I can think of. Very different.
Bob-Dubery Also Paul Weller, Mike Campbell, Peter Buck, Pete Townsend.... Roger McGuinn played a 12 as well. It's easy to not spot the 12s because of the arrangement of the machine heads.
singemonkey X-rated Bob wrote I've been obsessively watching vids of this dude for the last couple of days. I reckon he was working with a single director. Very cool vids. As I kept watching Free Fallin' I became gradually more impressed with the story telling of the video director. Blah blah. Back to Rics.
AlanRatcliffe Love Tom Petty. Rics are good at chime and twang. Peter Buck of REM, Johnny Marr of the Smiths are other fine examples of the Ric sound, along with more Britpop bands than you could shake a stick at (Oasis, Libertines, Charlatans, etc.). The Edge also often uses one.
