I haven't practised banjo since I reflected on how crappy my guitar playing was and decided I had to get that nailed first. Learning bluegrass banjo with fingerpicks is quite a big project to me. And it's not easy to just play a tune until your fingers can naturally find melody notes at any rhythmic point in a roll, and change rolls instinctively to make those notes. Weirdly, I have no idea how the easier-to-learn, folk, "frailing" banjo is done in practise.
I will go back to it. It's a wonderful instrument to play and just lights a fire under a piece when it's included.
I'm revising my opinion of the banjo because of an album I got for Christmas. It's a series of duets by Bela Fleck (banjo) and Edgar Meyer (double bass). These guys are marvellous players and they take on pieces by Bach and even Miles Davis and it's just FAB to listen to.
yeah Bob you loaned me the cd and that duo is incredible,,,,,,,,,,,, but i have to say maybe we enjoy it so much cos the banjo player plays more like a guitarist who is just using a banjo........ and the atypical banjo style is not used....... i think it's mre what he plays on it that appeals to us....and yeah i woulda loved to hear him rather play guitar but the same parts,,,,,,
however that said it's an incredible album that definitely is worth the hours listen ......... and inspiring beyond belief......... to what one can do musically .and to add the cherry on the top it was recorded live.so no studio trickery .... mind blowing album
