I would say MI AUDIO Crunchbox should be a strong contendor ?
You got one Dan?
Danny-B
Sadly no, but would definitely enjoy one ? Huuuuge Marshall tone, in a box.

Boss blues driver.
MIKA-the-better-one
a Fulltone OCD will eat a Blues driver for breakfast...... on all levels.... Not to say a BD2 is not a decent pedal but hardly when compared to the OCD
In respect to a newer pedal, check out the TC electronic Mojo Mojo (thats my next baby)
Or catalinbread DLS, Catalinbread WIIO

Into what amp?

JCM602 .... when its fixed ☹
IceCreamMan
Go give the ICe 9 a twirl ...play around with it ..you might be pleasantly surprised

OCD or crunchbox. If you're looking to use your amp clean (ish) at lower volume a Lovepedal Provalve 2 is another nice choice (gives you two amplike channels, but with a shared volume).
AlanRatcliffe
BTW - the Provalve 2 doesn't do clean boost or low gain. LOTS of gain on tap.

Thanks for the input guys! ? Sort of had my heart set on an OCD, but I'll check out the others mentioned. Was keen on the Xotic BB Preamp too, sounds good on gearmanndude's test.

My 2p's worth:
You need to actually try the pedal with your guitar or amp if possible, but if not you still need to try and hear it in a music store if you can. Many people get stung buying gear based purely on a review, recommendation or you tube clip and then find it doesn't quite work so well with their own gear.
I myself have turned into a pedal collector mainly in trying to get that 'tone' in my head. Most of my pedals are medium overdrive pedals for some reason!
Fulltone do good stuff, my Fulldrive 2 is certainly a good recommendation and has added boost facility. I have had the OCD on my wants list so not actually tried it live. But I have to say my favourite pedal at the moment is a Danelctro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive (v1). I know this is not easy to get in SA but over here they are everywhere and cost between £20 and £40. This pedal has made the biggest impact on me out of the box! They also do a Drive model which is rumoured to be based on OCD but again these cost betweeb £20 - £40 here, although I have not tried the Drive yet so can't comment tonally.
I am also getting into Xotic pedals which seem to be the business. I picked up a 2nd hand AC Booster and although not at the top of my Xotic list, it is proving to be very musical and especially when mixed with another OD gives some good tones. A friend has all the Xotic booster pedals and swears by the BB and the RC (lower gain).
Finally don't get too hung up on 'true bypass' and 'boutique' as most of the tones we chase after were recorded using standard pedals (if any).

Yeh the cool cat TO is awesome, the one pedal on my board that's going nowhere. Will get my Timmy in June so I'm hoping the TO and the Timmy will stack well together.
The problem in SA and in Durban in particular (as far as the major centres go), is that your chances of being able to try the high-end (boutique or otherwise) pedal locally that you're actually interested in are virtually nil. The local shops just don't have them. The key really is to buy something you can sell on at minimal loss if it doesn't meet your fancy. I usually find enough reviews from guys that have the pedal with various guitars/amps and get a feel for what overall seems like a solid buy, if it doesn't work for you sell it (or trade it) on again .... and so the circle of life continues. ?
AlanRatcliffe
The Cool Cat TO is a Timmy made with cheaper components in China (or at least, the early versions were).
BTW - I just ordered a Lovepedal Amp Eleven - very similar to the Tim, but voiced a bit better for Fender guitars and amps than the Tim. The boost is also quite different, being basically a Lovepedal COT. I'm hoping it stacks well with the Barber LTD I'm using (which is a wonderful near-transparent, low drive overdrive).
Actually, speaking LTD - Depending on what you mean by "mid-gain", that could do the job. It's got more than enough gain for me - especially with 'buckers. Quite different from the Hot British though, which is a lot more crunchy Marshall. Surprisingly inexpensive too.
ActionArnie
Well now that you mention using the LTD cranked up, I haven't really tried upping the gain on the TO. With the Timmy coming I could possibly use 1 for low and the other for higher gain. I've got a feeling though its not going to have the natural compression that a higher gain pedal would give me, will try it though.
I've heard great things about the Barber LTD, many guys (on the internetz) regard it as similar but better than the Timmy.

Don't wana hijack this thread, just want to ask if it relates to me or if I should start a new one.
I have a strat that goes into my newly acquired Ibanez TSA15H and cab combo. Love the amp and the sound I get, however, would like to get a bit more gain out of the amp. When the gain is set to max it's only a bluesy overdrive, nothing grit biting.
Should I look for a distortion to run on the clean channel or would an overdrive pedal work to push the gain channel on the amp?
Which of the pedals mentioned on this thread should I be looking at, all the same ones?

The Tube Screamer and MI Audio Tube Zone stack very, VERY well. Instead of a thick loose tone, you can get a bit more gritty distortion going but still keep it thick and smooth. Would work on the clean channel too. I'd recommend you try something along the lines of that, but whatever you do, try it on your amp, on both channels.
