I don't know the GRG270 but I've heard that the gios are very playable but don't sound great. Corts are fine for your genre, I certainly wouldn't buy that cort for playing mellow rock ? I have a Cort that I was using for metal, only selling it cause im not so into metal anymore...at one stage i had it tuned to drop Bb for parkway drive songs ? ...If you do go for that guitar make sure you try it before you buy it just to make sure its all 100% working ? You'll see a little switch next to the knobs for pickup selection just move that around and make sure it works with it in all positions, my first guitar had/has a faulty pickup selector, but it was a SUPER cheap secondhand guitar so ya ? haha
About the amp its probably 1 of line6's cheaper amps, there is a Marshall MG15DFX on gumtree for R1000 which is a saving of R800 and they're not bad for starting out, i still have my MG50DFX (same range as the MG15DFX...) and its great for starting out cause it gives you a few effects too, plus whether you get the line6 or the marshall you're probably gonna want to upgrade at some point, in which case I'd rather have only spent R1000 on the amp i dont use anymore ?

But was u satisfied when u played metal wit it?!OK,thank u...
Marshall MG15DFX is not for sale in Gauteng(gumtree),only Cape Town!
Yeah,u r right!hehe ?

Billy lets lookat specifics..
do want a hardtail or a trem, do you want elaborate shapes or just a wicked headstock,
for the music you want high output buckers, do you want new or second hand,
what is your budget?
Are you interested in tuning lwer than D or not really? I see youre in pta.. there are a few places yo could look at but I would recommend going 2nd hand. You can get more guit for your dosh.
Gimme a shout if you need help dude bt certainly anwering some of the above will narrow it down.. a bit anyways..
I think I'd like a tremolo(But it's not that important),about the headstock it's not that important for me!
I'm thinking about a seconhand now...But now is a trouble to find a good metal secondhand guitar in Gauteng(coz I've been checking da sites).....
Bro,my budget is till R3000!Yeah,certainly I'm looking forward to tune low!The roblem bout PTA's shops is dat they dont have many varieties of guitars and sey're expensive!
guidothepimmp
if youre looking to tune down, I would not recommend a trem like a floyd. A hard tail would be my recommendation. Reason is you'll have issues stabilizing the trem everytime you need to tune.
The GRG270 has one of these trems. If youre happy going GIO, then Id look at the hardtail (the non trem version)
Id suggest a longer scale like 25.5 inch too, just for comfort sake and they tend to handle lower tuning better. I wouldnt look at baritone for starters.
Cort make great guitars and I would certainly recommend those too. Models like the X12 or X6. They are slightly more pricey but you can find them 2nd hand for relatively cheap. I cant recall which X series guit is the hardtail. Just google it.
Check this sites classifieds too.
Check out music boyz in moreleta, they have a decent range to try. Also there is Musika in atterbury value mart that has a good range. There is even Jean music by the KFC. Also got a decent range.
I agree with lethe abouttrying them but if you are totally noob that means nothing. So brands to look out for are COrt, Ibanez RG or GIO, Schecter, Squire, YAMAHA PACIFICA, even some the entry level washburns like the X series.
So in summary, preferably no trem (considering the tunings) and a humbucker pup in the bridge.
Personally between the line 6 and the Roland, i like the Roland more. Played a few and theyre great value for starters, especially with the built in effects.
Kalcium
Yeah Guido has some good points ? About the amp I haven't tried either of those amps but I've only heard good things about the Roland Cubes so I'd say go with that, but maybe someone here knows about that line6...google the line6 model number and see what the reviews say...Or I will do that now quick and let you know ?
Kalcium
Ok I read up on it and the line 6 seems like a good amp for what you want to do ? I'd say offer the guy R2500 for the guitar and amp maybe you'll get lucky and he'll take it, else R2800 is not so bad for a guitar and amp, you can pretend the guitar cost R1500 and the amp R1300 ?. The guitar has a flloyd rose trem though which will be a mission for you to learn to tune, but if you're willing to put in the effort that seems like a really good guitar for the price!
guidothepimmp
snap, thats good investigative work Kal,
Thats a good guit, X6 are great value.
It does have a trem though.. If all else fails and the dude needs a hand there are plenty guys here who can lend a hand.. (me included).
I aGREE, for the amp and guit R2500/ R2800 is a steal..

But lissn,if dis deal doesn't work out,should I go for a Ibanez GRG270?!
Since u know betta bout guitars and u seems to have Sherlock Holme's genes! ? jst google it and see wat it got,and if it's worth buying?!Please...

a baritone is a guitar with a longer scale neck... Ie. A neck slightly longer than you would find on a normal guitar scale.
Because of its construction and scale length, you can tune to lower keys without losing tuning stability.
With a trem, hose types of Trems are what you would call floating trems and they lock on the trem ad at the nut. This means that to change tuning, you would need to unlock the nut, tune, adjust the trem to float level, then lock it all up again.
Sounds simple? not really, if you tune 1 string on a floyd, it throws the balance out on the rest of the trem and you end up having to tune everything.. Just a mission if you change tuning a lot.
With a hardtail, its MUCH quicker and MUCH easier.
As for the SHOPS,I live in PTA dude..

Seems like its very similar to the Cort that guy is selling ? Also has the tricky tremolo...How much is that gio going for at the mo?
smiles_b
Kal it's about R2800-3000... :-\
guidothepimmp
Billy,
Honestly, you should go for what you like, bt seriously I wouldnt buy a GIO for that kind of money. There arebetter guitars on sale even on this forum for less.
You can pick up a GIO for half of that and then Id say it is worth it. But not at R2800. For that price you can get the RG series by ibanez which s a "better" range than the GIO and comes with etter quality trems and hardware..

What is this thing 'nu-metal' and 'rapcore' that you speak of? I thought it died at the turn of the century. ?
Vintage-Vibe
You need to decide:
6 string detuned or 7 string ?
fixed bridge or trem ? (tremolo will allow some of those Borland-esque dramatic tricks)
You definitely need: 2 x HB pickups
22 or 24 frets
Medium to high output pickups
Space on scratchplate/body cavities for a killswitch etc

6 strings,I'd to have trem but it will gimme lots of work!
thank u man!Wat do u think about Epiphone Les Paul ultra for my genre?!
BMU
Ok just to throw a spanner in the works here. When you're starting out, you don't need to decide anything. Just get a guitar and start playing it, any guitar you like and fits your budget. Make sure it's a guitar you like, that's the only important thing. Cos if you hate it you won't play it.
Any guitar with humbucking picukps can do metal. The amps you mentioned are both great. Trems can be blocked, so get one and see if you like it. Or not. It really doesn't matter that much. Scale length and all those other subtleties matter hardly anything at all when you're starting out.
Best is the enemy of good. Just start.

Yeah, that's a sure thing...But can I blockthe trem manually at home,or gotta take it to a shop and stuff?!?
