Hey guys
I'm not an affiliate of the company I'm about to mention, but I feel like I scored a real bargain so I'd like to share...
Webafrica are running a special this week, basically it's an 30GB package for R199 a month, but not at crappy uncapped speeds (if you're in the Cape Town area I hear it's really good, I'm in KZN and I have very decent speeds, sub 100 pings on most local game servers and I only have a 384kbps line ) and when you sign up you get an additional 100GB p/m between 12:00 and 06:00 am, so you can schedule your monster downloads then. They are only giving away 30 per day this week, you just go on to their website www.webafrica.co.za and follow the red alert special. The button appears at 12:00 noon and if you're quick enough you will score a package. (They ran out in 3 minutes today, I managed to jump onto a clients PC at their office and nab one while I was there ?)
With a line rental you're looking at around R350 a month if you think about it, which is less than what I was paying 2 years ago for a 3GB cap.
So I'm downloading all those huge demos and patches and updates etc tonight ? ? ? ?

While I don't doubt that this is a good deal (webafrica is a good ISP) sub 100 pings on local servers on a 384 is not amazing at all...im on the notorious mweb R219 uncapped deal and i get a 36 ping to battlenet...however in terms of dota, mweb gives DotA players issues because of the peering problem since mweb cut ties with telkom. Basically if a telkom user hosts a game, mweb users cant join without getting 1000 pings and vice versa, however is a neutral isp hosts (such as webafrica) both telkom and mweb can join...
But ya a good deal because the fact that it isn't an uncapped package means you will have full speed at all times and webafrica is quite a good isp. Also on a 384 you probably wont use up the 30GB, especially if you do all your big downloads after you've gone to bed. ?

I find caps like 30gigs a little frustrating.. They are very big, but not unlimited.. So.. You CAN still get capped.. My brother has uncapped at home and in a month he downloaded over 75gigs worth. So, it's possible to download a lot on a 384 line on uncapped. I'd rather just get the uncapped version and leave my downloads running all day.
Sure, if you're a gamer things change, but if you're getting it to download a ton of stuff, i'd go uncapped route ?

Afrihost do an uncapped 384 for R197 p.m. "Semi-shaped" (i.e. they don't allow file sharing protocols and limit speed to sites like Rapidshare and Hotfiles during business hours). The only caveat is if you go over 300GB regularly they will put you on a list of people who get throttled speeds when network bandwidth is under stress.
You don't wanna know what my monthly traffic is... 4096 uncapped. While it's shaped during the day, it still adds up with two of us working from home.

I'm also currently on 4meg uncapped.. Openweb gold running on the VB backbone. Basically completely unshaped unless you use torrents (I use an alternative). I pull minimum 300gigs a month ?

There's 100GB after hours as well, but I take your point, that can be very frustrating running out of cap especially when you think you'll never manage with such a "huge" allowance (I can remember when I got my first proper PC upgrade and thinking that I could never possibly fill up my mighty 1GB hard drive, no way! Only to discover a few weeks down the line that, yes, I could. lol).

I have a friend on that package and he's always getting dropped from our sessions and his pings are usually around 150 - 200, but I live in a small coastal town so maybe it's just my area?

??? The numbers thrown around on this thread would make even a monkey's head spin.

4Mb uncapped line here too, through Axxess. Costs about R500 p/month for the account, but it's entirely worth it.

Could be hey...cause I get 150-170 ping when I play an european server...(RGC is so good! ?)
I wish I had 4meg uncapped, honestly, it basically means you have a folder full of videos called www.youtube.com cause if you dont have to wait for the video to load, it basically is on your computer...

I'm on a package with Cybersmart, its a 384kbps line with a 2 gig cap, but its unlimited on weekends from 12am Sat morning to 6am Monday morning. All for R199p/m including the adsl line rental. When the downloads are going its always at top speed, and it's unshaped.

well, I got onto thei webafrica.co.za/red site and sat poised looking at thie "try again at 12.00" button and clicking it plenty before 12 and at 12 and right thru till about 12.15 and nothing happened. and then the button just changed and said "too late". So i'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing.

Yeah I see a lot of people have said the same thing on their forums, I think they changed the layout of that page a bit because there was a lot of confusion yesterday, and they had to let more people through than they were supposed to. Basically when I clicked it it took me to a customer details form asking for existing or new customer details, where I entered my info and submitted it.
It's running the whole week so maybe you'll still get lucky ?

They are my current ISP and I had the same experience today. I took it up with their support line who are usually quite good, but today I had the misfotune to deal with someone who had delusions of adequacy. I'm not so sure I even want to try again tomorrow.

So in the quick scurry to take advantage of this killer deal, has anyone had a chance to read the fine print? What if it says R199 for the first 3 months, then reverts to their normal price of R1359pm?
Just saying ?
Personally, I hate when companies do this kind of thing. With the reports here of limited success, I'm suspecting they might be limiting it to one sign up a day and just want to get some interest in their other offerings. Dirty pool if you ask me.
G-Man
Yeah they did over hype the whole thing, making people wait to find out what it was that they were doing and blabbing on about how the way we looked at the internet would be changed forever blah blah blah...
I'm not a fan of this style of marketing because the hype never lives up to the expectations, I got a reduced rate on a big cap (nice discount for me, but by no means revolutionary) the way they were carrying on I thought they were offering exclusive access to the WACS lol ?.
I've been assured by one of the sales people that the price will remain R199 for my account indefinitely or until I choose to cancel it. If they decided to increase the price I would simply cancel my account and sick the consumer watch board on them.

You know what? I finally did get my application for this lot in. But you know what? Doesnt look like I got lucky with it.

What is this alternative you speak of? My torrents during the day go at 4kbs ☹ at night its hits 41kbps if I'm lucky. I'm with mweb uncapped 384 line.
dee
I'm currently with MWeb, waiting for them to upgrade my home line to 4Mbps uncapped. Yay for work paying for it! ?
//Edit, doc-phil, I also get almost non existent torrent speeds during the day. It usually picks up from about 8. I think this is an MWeb/shaped thing. I've heard they shape a lot of heavy file sharing sites as well during the day.
