Building a Repertoire

How do YOU build a repertoire? I'm thinking of getting a file for the songs I want to be able to sing and play but how do you organise it all and how do you pick your songs? Do you have dividers for each song? And in each divider have the lyrics + music? What have you found to work?

Despite my infatuation with Satriani, I don't plan on adding many of his songs to my repertoire so we're not talking about pages of sheet music. Mainly just simple songs from Cat Stevens, Roberto Carlos, Fuel, Radiohead, Hendrix and Neil Young.

Do you have one folder for the songs you're learning (with the musical notation for advanced parts, and written notes and so on) plus another where you just keep the song, lyrics and chords?

I have a cheapie CNA folder that has 60 of those plasticy paper sleeve type thingies.

I just fill them up .....works for me and everyone in the band uses the same set up so all is good. at the back i keep the amp manual just in case i need to figure something out.

+1 and maybe a spreadsheet that shows the learning order and status of each... Rene has a % assigned to the numbers so we know how far along we are... none are at 100% >☹

I use the plastic sleeve "flip folders" too. I have a master loose folder with everything in and just slip the 20 or 30 needed for the gig into the flip folder.

Generally I try and fit everything on to one, max two pages, so I won't have to flip pages during performance. If you know the song already, one page is usually enough, working more as a reminder or as a "fake sheet" than a detailed note for note score. Most of my sheets just have the lyrics and chords, or occasionally, just the key (after all, if it's a blues number, you don't need more).

I have 3 folders............one with stuff that I like that includes lyrics, usually leads and rythmn sections as well. This folder gets pulled when I'm done with my other folder.

The second folder has the songs that I'm currently playing or busy learning and gets used the most.

The 3rd folder is the stuff that's been nailed.(currently very thin).
