hi ya all,
as most of you know i have been teaching music and doing pro gigs in jhb and pretoria for the last 3 years since i got back to the country ,
in Nov i was offered the full time position on the permanent music staff as a solo instrumental guitarist at the 5 star Palace hotel at the lost city in sun city my initial 3 month conract was extended to a 6 month one and expires at end of April, in this period my teaching practise was suspended, but i am resuming teaching from May ,
so any one interested in lessons pm me,
as for what area's i teach in ....... in fact most of them within a radius of jhb and pta....
i teach all over jhb and pta, and again as many of the forum members who i have taught know instead of the students coming to me i offer a service where i travel to different parts of jhb and pta on different days of the week , and i organise my students in those area's to be available on that specific day,
so say monday will be "northcliff day" and i will travel to Northcliff and teach students in that area and also students in area's i need to pass to get there or back home........ on that day .... this system saves the busy execs who want to take lessons from havng to face traffic and spend time travelling after a long day at the office.... and for me it's only one trip and i ussually have enough students in an area to make it viable , so a bit complicated and the students need to be willing have lessons on days when i'm in a specific area but at the end of the day it's easier
as for genre's i teach most genre's and most importantly i teach "how to understand music" everyones scared of theory , but i can teach you to not be scared of theory cos without it you learn music like a parrot , but being able to understand what you doing is where the power lays...
so regardless whether you play thrash metal or country blues , the understanding of the music is the same..... and many musicians get started and miss the crucial step of learning the basic understanding of chords and keys and scales( we not talking about learning sight reading here .. but about understanding why you solo in certain ways over certain keys and songs.... )
i also teach bass guitar ....... i may be a pro guitarist now, but i studied upright bass back in the 80's and spent more than 10 yrs of my pro career playing electric bass all over the world in all genre's jazz/rock/pop/show bands /theatre /studio sessions
as for me and my track record..as i mentioned i studied upright bass in 80's and followed that with a life of constant touring doing hotel gigs and shows and sessions both here and abroad, i spent years being the guitarist in various hotel bands doing pop and rock, and then as i grew older mellowed out to play acoustic world music , and jazz, and for last 6 months as i mentioned above been playing mostly jazz fingerstyle solo guitar in a major luxuary hotel
anyway they say "those that can do and those that can't teach" well i'm doing the pro gigs and teaching , so breaking the mould i guess
anyway a long winded explanation ...... but it's for the benefit of those that don't know me or my travelling method of teaching ....
but all i'm really saying is .."i'm back"
pm for more details and fee's(which if you fit into my travelling schedule is very affordable)

Would you ever consider online teaching, like skype teaching?

I'm going to midrand for a week in my June/July holidays. Maybe we could organise a longer lesson, due to the fact that its kinda a once-every-5-years-thing that I am in your neighbourhood ?
IceCreamMan
Idi Amin ( as in I'm in) ?

A GFSA 'groeps-woeps' sounds like an idea! Dunno how you'd cater for the different skill levels in one group tho. That, and keeping everybody focussed and not talking kak the whole time! ?

hey guys thanks for the responces and pm's ,
and i have thought of skype lessons but need to check out the "hardware " and see if it can work ...i have skype but it always lays up when i chat to my friends in europe so not sure if it's viable....... but hey let me look into it ... however personally i like to be upclose and personal when i teach , anyway how can you have "show and tell" and check out everyones cool gear and show them my new buys .when you on skype and can't play the other persons guitar ? ....
and no group lessons...... sorry.....l i have been occasionally asked to lecture on a topic which is possible in a group.. however i find it's the personal one on one attention that makes the difference....... also no one can get away with not understanding something ? in a pvt lesson where in a group many tend to "fall off the bus" and get left behind without the tutor noticing
