A small issue most people dont fully get is. That sometimes a overdrive/distortion pedal in a rig is not used for its normal purpose as you would think.

When you look at that schematic of satch's setup you see the Boss DS-1 appearing right after the wah pedal. This is almost the same as my setup. Satch propably uses the distortion in his amp ( and its not a marshall, its peavey and previously mesa boogie tripplle rectifiers ). The think about this "additional distortion" is that you can drop its gain down ALLOT so it barely distorts ( the DS-1 distortion pedals gain does go to mild breakup on 0 ). But the main thing you would use it for is to add some trebble and output to your signal when its stomped. Adding more output gives one more sustain, and the added trebble makes the solo stand out a bit more. Im not 100% sure its what satch does but it would make no sense using a peavey or mesa if you use an external distortion pedal ?

That's exactly how many guys like Gary Moore, David Gilmour,etc. use them - as a kind of a booster and treble boost to kick the amp harder.

Yep, its a very affective tool ? i use my TS-808 for this.

Satch uses his DS-1 for lead solo's on most of his live tunes, just to get an extra bit of power, certainly not for tone.

In my experience, unless they are heavily modded they always change the tone at least a little. Same with the Tube Screamers and many other pedals.

I had the DS-1 and gave it to norio. It does not change the tone that much when set right. Thats the same thing with tubescreamers, the tone they "add" usually makes it sound a bit better also.

Hmm. I hear a bit of an upper mid peak with the DS-1. The Tube Screamers have quite a bit of boost in the mids - which is what makes them so good for Strats and Fender amps, which are a bit mid deficient. The mids help solos cut through.

I think the most transparent pedal for boosting your signal would be the OD-1...if you don't wan't too much colouring I guess....

Just use a completely clean signal boost pedal like the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster pedal - no colouration at all !
