One small step at a time OR my 18 watt Marshall build

ezietsman · 2011-04-06T21:41:41+00:00

So I've decided to build an amp. A twin channel 18 watt amp based loosely on the 1974x Marshall from the 60s. The first channel will be more or less the same as the original 18 watt's, just a volume and tone knob and very little gain from the preamp, all the drive will come from the two EL84s in the power section. The second channel will have Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass and Master Volume. This will be a higher gain channel with more preamp drive than the normal channel. Befiore you ask, the gain knob and pot will go into the lo input on the second channel, as I won't be needing that input ? Instead of having a power switch like all other amps (design flaw), mine will have a switched pot that switches it on and off (duh!) as well as control the loudness of the amp by varying voltages to the power amp and phase inverter. So I'll be able to get proper power section drive at any volume. To get things rolling, I present the first component of my amp, its also the only one I have at the moment. THE PLEXIGLASS FACEPLATE! more to follow...

Easily organised. Find a cab and the monkey can use it on Thursday evening ?

What about plugging it into the 12" of Jack's valvestate combo?

I might be pulling out another guitar tone trick on the night. It'll be fun for guitar players to see/hear ?

You can try that IF that combo's speaker has a cable with a jack on you can easily remove and plug into the head. My valvestate doesn't have that so YMMV.

Ah. Ok. I see.

Maybe there's another forum member in the cape with a cab with Greenbacks (I seem to remember someone building one not long ago) you can use for the eve ?

I'll check in with Rene (he's got the Marshall at his place). Cool!

Now that sounds like a plan.

Cool, it's a one hour set so after we've trimmed our usual long list I'll send you a couple of options ? maybe Spoonful or Hellfire Blues (Cm)...? Any preferences since you know the set list so well ?

If you read back on my posts on this thread, you'll see that it's become a little complicated. ? I was bringing my SG back to my place to rephotograph it and readvertise it and then stopped at EZ's to try out his amp... with the SG... mistake. ☹

He's just thinking up excuses not to sell it...

FenderBender

Who needs excuses with that work of art ?

BTW Singe, I slackened the truss a bit and dropped the bridge really low on my SG and now she is a breeze to play on those 10s, with a very light action and zero fret buzz. As I mentioned, I never performed a setup after replacing 11s with 10s last week. It's amazing how the tension on the neck varies so much between the string gauges. I'll need a set of tonerider Alnico IVs to complete the picture though methinks ?

arjunmenon

Might now be a good time to ask when the next Graemestock will be held?

It's been on our minds for a while now, but things are so damn hectic! The house is also on the market at the moment, so not sure about dates right now, but it will go on the front burner of the "decision making" oven ?

EDIT: Sorry for the thread hijack EZ ?

It has that classic SG sound. Just the pickups were a little dull sounding. The toneriders should set it to rights.
