I received a message from McGibbon's about this guitar

It's a Les Paul Classic, serial number 044158

The guitar was stolen with it's case, a slightly worn Gibson USA hard case.

Cool. It makes me think. I wonder what the ability to do accurate internet image matching will turn up one day. Might be a huge rush of people with old pics of their stolen stuff finding pics people have taken of the same gear 20 years later. This LP for e.g., is very identifiable before a refin by the streak next to the lower volume knob and running behind the tailpiece.

Although the case in the pic doesn't look worn, I presume it's the actual guitar above ?

hey there, there is very little wear on the case, a couple scuffs on the edges.
its also non chambered so its pretty heavy.
if anyone can help me find it I WILL REWARD YOU!!!!!!!!

DillonG...try the following. Place an ad in Junkmail (National) and Gumtree " Gibson Les Paul Wanted" and ask for pics of the guitar offered by any respondents. It's free and maybe you locate your guitar this way. I'm pretty sure the person who stole your guit is not gonna gig with it. He's wants to sell it asap.

...and phone every Cash Converters, pawn shop and 2nd hand instrument shop in town... I've heard of Stradivarius violins being recovered that way (in Joburg, nogal). Chances are it's probably not gone very far...

Good thinking. Do they have an alert system I wonder - where staff in all their stores get mailed pics of stolen stuff? That would be useful, I'd imagine.

I was thinking along the lines of a publicly accessible database containing serial numbers of stolen muso gear. Its easy enough to file off a serial number, but that immediately looks suspicious.

I'm not sure. It's possible they do though actually... Always worth asking them to spread the message - For obvious reasons they don't want to be known for selling stolen goods, so its in their own interests to help out people who's gear may turn up in their stores...
