The only one that I could find is in fact a multi-FX unit which is unfortunately also a floorboard - the Line6 Stombox modeler. It's got a looper and midi control, but then you might as well look at something like a GT-10 from boss which is also midi controllable(i think, as my GT-8 was), but it has a looper and normaly you can control anything of the multi-fx unit via midi. will continue the search as I love loopers and what people do with the stuff.

AFAIK, you're stuck with the (primarily) delay units from the bigger manufacturers: Eventide Orville, TC 2290, Lexicon MPX G2, TC D-Two.

Don't forget to check out Looper's Delight: http://loopersdelight.com/loop.html - they have a section on all the available loopers and reviews from a looper's perspective.

Ok, in my opinion, when people start doing full shows based on looping and they are doing lots of manipulation of the loops and sampling etc., my advice is either get a proper sampler (Roland SP 555, got live looping features and assigning to pads, etc. also has midi so with a behringer foot controller, pretty damn useful and more powerful than a loop station) or GET ABLETON!

Ableton is made for live looping and sampling. It's brilliant with a controller like a launchpad (which costs R1500 and comes with a copy of live lite). You can do MUCH MORE with it!
Its like going from a 10w solid state single channel practice amp to a JVM.

Oh I would not like to use looping live, what I'd like to do is write interlocking 2-guitar loops (think bluesy mix between "Always On The Run" and "There's Going To Be A Jailbreak") and I've concluded I don't want to go the DAW way. If the guitar sounds don't complement and separate, the thing does not work.

I had a similar problem to the original question in the thread and found a solution that may be of help depending on your setup...

I use a DD-7 as my looper pedal and you can set it so that so that the unaffected sound goes to one amp and the effect goes to another. (when bypassed it goes to both outputs). So I can set my loop to play on one amp and my improv over the loop goes to another! Has the added bonus that you can set different tones for your loop/what goes over it. If you use multiple layers you still have the same issue though...

I'm sure that other looper/delays with more than one output can be used in the same way... so read your manual! ?

A lot of amps have 2 inputs... maybe you can try it like that as well?

Sorry, this might be off topic, but I've heard the terms " . . .resonance cascade . . ." somewhere, hmmmm, now I remember, it was Half-Life! Have you been playing half-life(1) lately BMU? or did it leave a mark on you as well for being a game ahead of it's time. hehehe.
