NGD and Friendly Customs officers...

ok this thread may just be of interest to some of you..

we landed back in Cape Town yesterday after a 3 week trip to the UK...

and whilst the wife shopped up an entire suitcase on her own of stuff - I just bought myself one nice little item from Wunjo Guitars in Denmark street.

so after collecting our luggage in cape town we heading towards the customs area, where you can either go down the "Nothing to Declare" lane, or the "Goods to Declare" lane..

now being the fine upstanding citizen that I am, I told the wife that I will declare the guitar..

so as we get closer, there are at least 20 customs officers all busy pulling people out of the "Nothing to Declare" lane and making them uppack every single bit of luggage..

we, on the other hand, actually walk into the Goods to Declare lane and stand there, waiting.. eventually a customs officer comes up and asks what we want, so i say I want to declare my guitar.. he says 'dont worry about it"... so i tell him i want to do the right thing here, can i have the forms...
after a bit of haggling, he asks for the sales receipt, which I cant find, so i told him it cost GBP425.00 he goes over to his supervisor, they do some calculations,and comes back saying that as it works out to less than R5,000 I do not need to declare it, and can we please move, we blocking the way...

so off we went... nothing to pay..

the customs guys were all very friendly and helpful and i think they appreciated the fact that we were trying to do the right thing ourselves..

so if any of you are thinking of travelling and bringing a guitar back, it looks like its not such a big scary issue to handle once you hit customs this side.

There are no customs on guitars ?
But dam, seems like its the place to walk through regardless.
