Got this off Uvongo Dave from gumtree at a bargain price ? Came with original hardcase and a nice leather strap as well as a new set of strings, even though...

Here is the final word on the refinish question:
"THE VARNISH WHEN I GOT THE SG WAS IN A VERY SAD STATE INDEED AS YOU KNOW SO I HAVE JUST STEEL WOOLED IT AND OILED IT WITH LEMON OIL"
Uvongo Dave types EVERYTHING in caps....

Not something I would have had done if I had seen it in its 'sad state' but it really looks, sounds and feels great so no complaints there and its a definite excuse to have it refinished at some stage ?

Congrats man, that looks sweet! Best cure for a neck heavy guitar is a broad strap made from material that won't slip over your shirt. You could even put some lighter tuners on if it really bothers you.

haha desperately trying to slow down, but when a deal jumps at me...How can I possibly say no ? I bought this with what I was going to allow myself to spend at the end of the year/start of next year...so unless some stupidly good deal comes knocking Im gonna hold back for a while ? At least on the big things...a pedal here and there cant hurt ?

I've got a new SG Standard and I love it. I'm interested to know how a '72 model sounds in comparison. Although, I'm yet to find two SG's that sound the same.

Not to try and burst the bubble in any way, but 70's era Gibsons are not usually the best specimens due to the Gibson corporate buy-out by Norlin Industries. Construction quality in this ear wained and thus the sound quality suffered.

What's your serial number? Does the guitar have a 3-piece neck? I'd bet my bottom dollar.

Re. 70's Gibsons....that's the general perception (same as with the CBS Fenders ) but I can assure you that these guitars are still formidable and very good instruments and these are becoming more and more collectable (even in the USA). The 3-piece neck and volute have its virtues...it makes for a very strong construction and should not affect the tone imo.
Kalcium got a great guitar at a great price and to be honest, if I had the choice between this '72 and a new SG...well, it's a no brainer ?

I've yet to actually see a Norlin Gibson that isn't a great guitar. I've seen some pics of them with crappy finishes, the LPs are heavy as hell, but the quality doesn't live up to the myth IMO.

They were the last Gibsons to be played by any of our guitar heroes - Mick Ronson, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde all played Norlins while I can't think of a single famous Gibson made after 1980.

I think a bigger part of the Norlin story - apart from the weight of LPs - were their poor design choices. The Paul anyone? People hated the RD, but compared to certain recent Gibson designs that shall go un-named, the RD is a classic. The mini-humbuckers, the giant bridges. These features didn't compare favourably with the '52-'65 Gibsons.

But the idea that they're poor quality guitars has been much exaggerated. And this is reflected in the fact that pre-1980 guitars continue to increase in real value.

Re the 3 piece maple necks. Now while I love having mahogany necked Les Pauls, the reason they were put on the '50s guitars? They were cheap. The Gibson flagship model in the '50s, the L5 had - guess what? A 3 piece maple neck.

ESP does the same thing today. Volutes too, if I'm not mistaken (Zark can tell us with that awesome Eclipse of his). And those on some of their top guitars while they still put all mahogany necks on even their cheap Les Paul copies.

The serial is 700000s which puts it between 1970 and 1972 but it hasn't got tremelo, the stop tailpiece was only offered in 1972 ? And yes 3 piece neck. Definitely a great instrument though ? I love it ? ...oh and singe u were curious about the pickups, the internet tells me they are Bill Lawrence designed super humbuckers, which were supposed to be high output, but by todays standards are really only medium output. What i love is that this guitar shouts classic rock through and through, and the best part is its not like im just getting the sound of classic rock, this guitar is from the same era ? so its an ACTUAL classic rock guitar ?

Exactly. An exhaustive researcher has confirmed that Angus Young's SG that he started off with in AC/DC was not a '68 - which is what my AY signature is based on - but a '70, much more like yours. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if AY has one of those '72s in his possession.
