I wanted to be a marine biologist, then at about age 16 the guitar bug hit and now for some strange reason I'm convinced that I will always have to be involved in music somehow. I realise this is a poor carreer decision and I'll probably never be in a position where I'll be earning anything close to a decent salary, but I'm just stubborn like that...
My love for the ocean has not died though, at home I have an enormous marine tank (2mx1mx0.7m or there abouts) and I have now started diving regularly. I just feel really at peace in the water and I love playing with all the fishes, crustaceans and sharks ?

I wanted to be a test pilot. Unfortunately I have crap eyesight, and South Africa doesn't seem to have a rip-roaring F-22 test program of its own ?
Second up: game programmer. I actually wrote a bunch of little game engines when I was a teenager. Eventually ended up in IT, where I earn a good salary but wouldn't exactly call this my dream job. I don't hate what I do, I just find it a bit uninspiring sometimes.
I see that WITS now offers a game programming degree too. Such a pity they didn't have that available with I was there in 1997.
Still, I'm always on the lookout for new stuff to get into.

When I was veeery little, I for some reason thought being a policeman would be a good idea. Some one who rights wrongs. Then it dawned on me at about 12 that music would always always take precedence. Just accepted it. So then I had this idea of combining the two, when I was a little older, and thought of being something of a music teacher, but more of a provider of solace through music. So far I'm providing myself solace and security through music and art and maybe one day when I'm big it will blossom into a big fun music/ art extravaganza. In the mean time I go about righting wrongs at the nursery school!

I wanted to be a ballerina because I fell in love with Rudolf Nureyev when I was 13 ( how misguided can you be). But it was also the music - Prokoviev's Romeo and Juliet, in the ballet he was performing with Margot Fonteyn that actually got me. Made me think that Rudolf and ballet had to be my true direction in life!

So did my mom! She has a lovely biographical dvd of him. I could watch it a few more times and not tire of it.

That's amazing! That music, the ballet itself and then him performing so incredibly, and Shakespeare's story - combined - were almost too much for a romantic young teenage heart to bear!!!!!!

I've done the following,
Checker in the railways,
Crane driver,
Forklift driver,
Taxi driver,
Male nurse,
Barman.
Then after completing my Bio Science degree, found the idyllic job at a Drakensberg Hotel taking people for horse rides through the mountains. Then made a fatal mistake of coming down to Durban for an interview with an International Company, who immediately offered me a job. Even though I had pitched for the interview in torn jeans with riding boots and spurs, and broken glasses. For some reason I accepted, worked all over the place. Then after 30 years they offered me and my mates a lot of money to bugger off, which of course we accepted gleefully, all in the name of BEE and such. So now I do what I always wanted to do, nothing, except play the guitar and talk S#&t with my mates.

I wanted to be a programmer since I was about 14. Now I'm the head of innovation for a small software development house and loving it. I learn something new every day, spend time with people smarter than me and earn a decent wage for doing it. That lets me buy nice music gear and go riding every day after work. With this plus family, what more could a man ask for.

I have wanted to be a car/automotive designer since I can remember. Studying architecture now, decent comprimise - far less risky ?

Would that be the royal natal national park hotel that closed down as far as I know? That was an amazing place, my favourite in the whole world. I even went on one of the horse rides, but I do not remember seeing you there

I wanted to be a teacher.
Was good at maths, had taught a lot of maths while at school, so thought that would be a good thing to teach.
Was then convinced to rather study Financial Services stuff because the pay was better.
Have done really interesting, ground-breaking and rewarding work within this industry
But the stress ... she is big ... which nearly killed me.
Have found myself looking for every opportunity to teach in life ... whether it's maths, computer science, djembe, telescope optics, ...
Within my workplace I look for any and every opportunity to teach ... and find a lot.
I was lucky enough to be invited to UCT a few weeks back to give a lecture.
It was TERRIFYING to be on the "wrong" side of the lecture theatre for the first time, but it went really well and I LOVED it.
Am just itching to do it again.
Yesterday afternoon I had no specific meetings planned; and decided that I would spoil myself by doing something really fun.
Found myself volunteering to teach a whole group of bright, eager young interns - absolutely loved it.
So ... my ideal job:
Learning new & exciting stuff.
Then teaching it to talented and enthusiastic students
And the job pays well.
We can dream ?

I used to want to be a guitarist but then life got in my way. Now I just want to be a beer truck when I grow up ?

Indeed, the beauty of that is in it's simplicity.
Now that I went to go watch the Cirque du Soleil I've decided I want to join the circus, or at least play in their band!

Likewise! Possibly a bit odd, but I'm really looking forward to the age where I can tell insecure young women just how beautiful they are without them assuming I'm hitting on them.

First thing I can recall wanting to be was an Astronaught then I became a bit more realistic and decided I wanted to be a Pilot... And I was actually well on my way to becomming one because I went to the airforce on training courses and stuff, but then I really sucked at maths and the whole plan fell through... now I know what I want to be for sure... a Musician!!!
