The best outdoors rock concert that you have ever been to

For those who are into sleeping and camping in on and off rain for 3 days, in a great big field - or maybe even in good weather, what is the best outdoors rock concert that anyone has been to. For me it was the Bath festival in 1970 . The line up of bands was the ultimate rock lovers dream. I was right in front of the stage, dead centre, watching Pink Floyd, John Mayall with Peter Green, Santana, The Byrds, Hot Tuna, The Flock, Moodie Blues, Led Zep, Collosseum, and a host of other bands whose names have been erased by the mists of time - [mists of time = the aging process].

Led Zep and Floyd both in 1970, wow - must have been amazing.

I was fortunate enough to go to Reading Festival (UK) 2002
Was a pretty insane line-up with 4 different stages - couldn't get to everything. The ones I saw:

White Stripes (awesome energy - I was standing right in front in the No-man's land part between stage and crowd)
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (I've always loved their stripped down, raunchy blues approach)
Pulp (Their last show before they split)
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
The Strokes
Janes Addiction
Weezer
Dandy Warhols
The Hives
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Interpol
The Kills

I was lucky enough to have a production pass, so I didn't have to share facilities with 80 000 people...
things can get a little messy at a festival like that ?

Best outdoors show I've been to (though it was a one-day affair and we didn't camp) was the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! concert in Harare in 1980.

Springsteen was amazing. Fab live performer. Nils Lofgren played a blinder.

Wingerdstock 1999.. Watching Supernature while chilling in a pool in the sunshine, the stage overlooking the huge pool, the only spot for the audience! ?

The old Wits Free People concerts were quite a blast

I went to one, possibly early 80's that had a young Johnny Clegg and Jaluka, Evoid and I would be lying if I told you who else was there.

There were also good concerts st Syringa Spa in the early 80's, I remember one with the "Asylum Kids" where Robbie through his guitar up in the air and in got stuck in the roof of the stage.

But none of these camper ones, although we used to get quite dirty at the Wits Free people concerts ?

Ja, there were some great Free People's concerts.

I remember 1979 when Corporal Punishment did a good set. Robbie Robb was there, but I can't recall which band he played with.

That would have been at Wits itself. The last one I remember was about 1989 out in Sandton somewhere. 89? 90? Johannes Kerkorrel was top of the bill.

The Metallica concert ? Other colabs have been nice but not nearly comparable. (Although there was at least food and drink at following Colabs!)

Well, it wasn't outdoors but the Deep Purple/Uriah Heep show last year at the Dome was pretty damn awesome!!!!

Monsters of rock 1991

First time I saw Metallica and AC/DC. Heard enter sandman for the first time and didn't think much of it at the time. I just remember thinking, WTF is with this sh*t???............lol.

Sacrilege! Although, to be fair, I remember seeing some of this "metal" stuff on TV as a kid and wondering what the hell is wrong with these long-haired angry people on my TV ?

At that stage I already been introduced to Iron maiden and early Metallica and was hooked. I'd so love to see Maiden live though.

How did Satriani keep you entertained for nearly 3 hours? Does he go acoustic? Chat to the crowd etc. 3 hours is hectically long

ha ha ha, angry people, one of my friends always refer to my music as 'cross music'
Metallica. At Greenpoint stadium 2006. Pity Apetown elcectircy couldn't keep up...
Evenescence. Excellent show, pity it was open, and a icy cold day with strong winds.

As symboloflife or whatever says, indoor, but the Uriah Heap Deep Purple at the Dome rocked!

Thanks ? I was definitely lucky.
As for Satriani, yes 3 hours is long for a guitar only concert. He didn't go acoustic at all. He did chat to the crowd though and did a pretty good job of building rapport. He played material all the way from (1st album) "Not of this earth" to "Is there love in Space" and didn't lose the crowd at any point, which says a lot IMO.
Steve Morse, as well, just looks so happy on stage and he's got such a great vibe as a person that it kind of spreads to the crowd.

I've been to a few awesome indoor concerts (Remember Shakti w/ John McLaughlin being one of them), but those don't qualify for this thread
