Hi,
I have been trying to connect my guitar to my pc so i could use amplitube and it refuses to work. It appears i need a DI box.
Any tips here, and where can i get one very cheap?
Also, what are your experiences with virtual amp programs? Are they as good as they seem they could be?

Refuses to work? A DI won't help with that. You might get rather flat lifeless sounds without a DI, but you should get some sound.
What interface are you using? You need something with a fair amount of boost or, if it's a line level interface, you'll need to use a preamp first.
The virtual amps are great for recording - I and others around these parts mostly use Guitar Rig successfully, although I've used them all.

i've used amplitube sans DI however as per the documentation it will not work via the line in you'll have to use the mic port and then on my desktop i had to play with the input level while inexplicably it worked perfectly first time on my laptop

I don't know about DI boxes or Amplitube, but I have recorded my guitar on the PC before. Not sure if this helps...
I got two identical adaptors for about R10 that convert guitar cable to PC microphone/line in.
If you don't wanna go straight in with your guitar, put effects in the chain. Or plug into your amp, then use your amp's lineout/headphones socket with the aforementioned adaptor into the PC, to retain your amp's sound.

Plug your guitar in your pc through the mic port. When opening AmpliTube now it will pick up the input, but you will get a terrible feed back and delayed sound. Download Asio4all from the net and it's good to go.

Mic inputs have the gain, but are low impedance, so still mess up the frequency response of the guitar - you lose a lot of "life" from the sound.
