lindsmuse I hear riffs and see things that just seem to have the same effect as the older generation bands and performers had, and find it quite interesting. I just heard an Opeth track 'Coil', reminds me a bit of Zeppelin. Then something about of System of a Down - can't pinpoint it - reminds of Frank Zappa. Something about Satyricon - Black Sabbath (same family of Metal more or less). Doe anybody else see these correlations? I know there's more just can't think of them now ... (beyond the obvious ties I mean.)
Squonk Most of the Modern Music ? I dont think riffs or ideas are always stolen but there but I am sure some are!
singemonkey But a bit more specifically, Woflmother sounds like Sabbath mixed with... more Sabbath. A lot of bands have elements that are highly reminiscent of classics - just as the classic bands were of their predecessors. Jack White sounds a lot like Robert Plant. And Robert Plant sounds a lot like Janis Joplin (I'm not quite sure who Janis sounds like). But there are only a few that - like Wolfmother - are basically just a restatement of a single band.
AlanRatcliffe I find that it's difficult to not hear strong influences in everything new I hear. To the point that very little stands out as having any originality at all. The old adage "what's good is not original and what is original is not good" applies to most newer music. However, sometimes someone will take me by surprise by taking different influences and throwing them together creatively or warping them delightfully - Bumblefoot, Mattias Eklundh, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Porcupine Tree spring to mind.
Jack-Flash-Jr There are correlations everywhere... I don't think I've ever heard anything that couldn't be related to an earlier (sometimes lesser know) incarnation. The issue is, is it problematic, especially the obvious links? For me, hell no! To use the Wolfmother example, derivative? Sure. Fun? Hell yes!
