Imagine this - you have a guit where each fret is divided into six sections, one for each string. The sections are electrically isolated from each other. On each section you have a thin sensor wire, (thus a whole bunch of wires for the whole fretboard), and you have a voltage running through each string. This means, with a bit of electrickery, you can detect which string is being fretted where. Each string would need to be electrically isolated from the others, of course, so no common metal bridge. You could do all sorts of interesting things with a setup like this. You could have a MIDI signal out, or software that auto-tabs your playing, or you could even do cool-'n-kitsch stuff like LEDs on the fretboard that light up as your fingers move up and down it if that floats your boat. You could have guitar hero-esque games that actually teach you something real. Comments? Does anybody know if something like this has been done?

Tonedef, you are welcome to my plastic synth guitar that has all you describe - except for the rubber fretboard covering the contacts (fell apart). It came second hand with a Boss power supply that I wanted so I figured it was for free and I would cast a rubber fretboard someday; I don't think I will ever get to doing that.
