Usually, my position was that music gear should pay for itself, but my music-related income is now pretty much non-existent. Which is why I'm selling the GT-8 since I got a Nova System. Otherwise, the basic rules of personal finance apply - it depends on whether the new guitar will be important to your trade (in which case it's a priority) or just a nice-to-have (in which case you gotta choke that desire down for a while if you don't have the funds lying around).

yeah i too agree .and that seems to be the pro muso's strategy . i always ask "how many gigs will pay for this or that " and if the answer is more gigs than the ones i already have booked and confirmed in my diary, it has to wait .......
and as stratisfear said one learns to only buy gear one can use to earn money .
however sometimes and i must admit not often in my case, one needs to go out on a limb if one knows a certain piece of gear will up ones marketability to get gigs..or get a gig that has certain requirements....then i'm prepared to risk spending the emergency fund......but i think it through really well......anyway thats my excuse for spending when i know i should be cautious and i'm sticking to it ?
