I've heard all the problems, and I know Apple products can be insanely frustrating. But this is ridiculous. Apart from being able to ditch my ipod, I'd be able to carry this wealth of useful stuff around in this one multi-purpose device.

Android is the way to go ? Although I must admit that the iphone 4 does have an incredible LED Backlit screen.

Lots of Pad's from different manufacturers coming out soon, dont get too hung up on ipad ?

On another (in tune) note, I try to separate techy toys from music because they just distract me from actually playing - we don't need half the stuff we surround our guitars with (including the top E and B strings, I'll say it before the OP does!)

I'm an android boy too.. Got an Elocity A7 7" tablet and a Samsung Galaxy S phone.. To me, apple's are like Taylors... I'll just leave it there! ?

As for guitar apps, there are some cool one's for android, not as many and no guitar rig for android yet ☹ However, I'm sure it'll come.

In general, I agree with this. But I'm not talking about doing some fancy ass thing that makes me smile for half an hour and then I never use it again. I'm talking about one device doing the same work that a number of devices would otherwise do. You can use the iphone to practise quietly on your electric - even on holiday - like one of those vox plug-ins, except even more versatile (conceivably you could even use it as an emergency back up rig). You can use it to multi-track song-ideas - instead of my current inaudible phone recordings of licks I come up with. You can use it as a chord reference, a strobe tuner, a practise guide... this is not trivial stuff.

Yes, I wouldn't buy it just for the guitar stuff (it also takes the place of my ipod - 1 less device to carry), but the point is that if it doesn't make a hash of the other stuff (which in my limited experience it doesn't: telephony, email, reading docs, web browsing, etc.) then the guitar and sound recording (to record interviews as well this would be useful if there's a plug in stereo mic) would carry the day.

+1 on carrying as little stuff around as possible...
The only thing to remember about the iPhone is it only really likes talking to macs (I'm neither here nor there on apple, just prefer Galaxy S interface and screen, and it talks to my macbook), a lot of the stuff you want to do will need more than basic file transfer to a computer I think... The solution is to get a mac as well! Also, I'm not sure if all the apps are for sale in SA... sure as hell can't buy anything from iTunes (that said I think android apps aren't available either except for the free ones?! unless you wangle dangle)

I still can't get my head around them... I see people using them on flights, but they still have their laptops (!) - what would one use it for other than entertainment for kids (when a laptop isn't available). I watch movies on the plane but I'd rather do it on my 13" mbp screen. My colleague bought one to use for presentations, which he ended up doing from his mac anyway. My phone covers the app thing, kindle is a better reading experience if you don't want to lug paper (and ebook readers are available for phones and laptops anyway)...
I see it as a giant phone that you can't use to make calls. If I had a compelling reason to get one, I would go for the Galaxy Pad rather anyway (cheaper, plays better with other gizmos). I don't hate apple btw, prefer my mbp to any laptop I've ever used...

I don't fully agree with this statement. I connect my IPhone4 with Windows and ITunes no problem. File transfer etc work like a charm.
I'm even connecting my phone with Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and can do all accept backup IOS!

MAC PC's are very expensive and if you are not using it for graphic design it is not worth it.
Bang for buck a normal desktop PC will outperform a MAC.

To give you a idea. I just build a new work pc for myself. For about R13k I got the following:
Monster motherboard with 6 core AMD processor. 16GB of RAM. 1TB disk space. 2 x 24" LED screens.
Monster video card to drive the 2 screens. Logiteck wireless desktop setup.

Yes, but it's talking to apple software... (file transfer is a basic requirement). Agree 100% with the pc thing... that's why I would get a phone that's more compatible (and open, and you can replace the battery!) with a windows/linux pc....

More expensive than the low end iPad maybe (which does almost nothing)...

keep in mind, with the release of the ipad 2, the prices of the ipad 1 have already come down!
Personally, i would go the apple ipad over the samsung galaxy, purely from a stability perpective. android releases have far from been stable...

And if i were looking at a product to use for my guitar... Well... with amplitube for ipad and ipod... its a no brainer really, not to mention the hordes of other proper software available!

Another thing is that if the dev's saw a future in the android devices, they would have already developed for them! but they havent! they instead chose to focus on apple!
While im not an ammple fan, if i wanted the interface, i would end up buying one for especially fender amplitube!

All I know is that my iPhone does what I want it to do in a way I want it to do it. It also hasn't restarted itself in the middle of a call like some of the other phones I've owned have, so altogether I'm a happy camper.
