I took all my overdrive pedals to a friend today and slammed it infront of his jcm800 for experimentation.
eventually the boss ds-1 sounded the best infront of the amp, but when we added the wah (vox v847 ) which is not true bypass by the way, the setup just came to life, without the wah it just sounded boring.
(the wah was in off position, just to explain the color it adds to the signal)
so before you think of true bypassing your pedal just trust your ears, maby it sounds good with it.

Yeah good tip man!
Working with what is , often reveals good stuff.

Same as how cheap isn't necessarily bad etc.. Too many variables when it comes to making music so just make do with what you got, your choices dictate your tone anyway.

Absolutely! I believe spending the time experimenting and learning how to use what you've got properly trumps popping another new "magic" device into your chain every time.
True bypass sometimes creates as many problems as it solves. One or two decent buffered bypass pedals in a chain (especially at the beginning and end of the chain) are usually a good idea.
