Guitar strap

I need some advice please. Looking to get a guitar strap for an electric guitar. What should I be looking for? Leather or Polypropylene, lockable, any specific width or length? I've looked at some of the planet waves and Levy's but just seems like there are too many options. Not sure where to start.

Levy's make good quality straps, I have a couple myself and they have a wide range to choose from. Always good to get something that locks as well (small price to pay to prevent your guitar from dropping), I guess its very much a personal preference, go try some out and see what fits best. ?

Yup - personal preference. I prefer 2" wide leather straps, preferably well broken in hard leather with a soft leather backing. Leather grips well, lasts a lifetime, is comfy once broken in and doesn't make you sweat like the synthetics. The Levy's are great, some of them are quite expensive, but if you figure that it'll last the rest of your lifetime, it's worth it.

Strap locks, I don't like any of the clip-lock systems (they eventually wear out), so always go for the separate Schaller Strap Locks, which last forever and never fail.

Personally, I use Dimarzio cotton straps with separate strap locks. I used to use the Dimarzio clip lock straps, but the clips actually scratch the guitar's finish over time... Dimarzio cotton straps breath best of all the straps I've used and they keep your guitar at the angle you prefer. No sliding around...

SLipx , i have a spare generic strap lying around ..if you close to north riding in randburg you welcome to pick it up. its synthetic worked well enough i just replaced it with a leather effort.

Leather - or at least with a soft leather surface on the side that will be against your clothing or skin. Anything else slips and slides too much.

Length is a personal preference. But any half-way decent strap will be adjustable and allow you to find a playing position that's comfortable for you.

There are specially longer cut straps available if you want your guitar around your knees.

why not make your own?

It is really easy and you can make a unique design (or knock a famous one off like I did).

I made the Dave Gilmour strap (used to belog to Hendrix) to go with my Custom Shop Gilmour relic.

It seems to me like all the straps I try are longer than I'd want, when it comes to the leather ones I've tried the Ernie Ball, Levy etc. and all of them are too damn low, I had to get an extra notch sewn into my leather Levy strap because of this. It is because of this constant struggle to find a comfy strap that sits right that I've decided to go for a synthetic strap (neoprene), I think I'll end up going with the Levy PM48NP3 (3 1/2" width padded neoprene with 2" polypropylene webbing - adjustable with leather ends).

3 1/2" is a bit overkill but for 7 & 8 strings it's nice to distribute the extra weight better, now I've just gotta get the agents to bring em in ?
