A great article on the local MK award crap that was aired..... as well as the failure of the channel.....

Yea.
MK would not play our video because:
1) The strobe effects could cause epilepsy
2} It was old fashioned {Something we took as a great compliment.}
Yet, one of the main reasons was that it was not Afrikaans of course.
After reading this article, I'm glad they turned us down, quite frankly.

Looks like the time for a broader internationally inspired "rock" music scene in SA is not yet. Sounds to me like they want to simply be an Afrikaans music channel but are forced by cultural pressures to be more inclusive, not the other way around.

Overdriven guitar music is still very much a minority sport in SA, and these kinds of entities have to follow the rather small money pool.

I know, I have no delusions about the channel..... I know its catering to the average kid in Potch, and Pretoria who generally thinks Bon Jovi is the biggest coolest band ever.
Funny enough, my bands first EP's music video got on regular rotation on MK, as well this they got us on live to play some songs, interview us ETC...... but really when you watch the channel and you watch the bands it is very clear, that MK draws from the same pool, or whats aparently cool at that time. They would rather put 3 different videos by the bastard that is Van Coke, than air some newer bands.

My biggest thing is, they could really push the scene, or further create a VERY vibrant scene, inclusive of so many people, styles etc. Similar to what KEXP does in Seattle. But instead Mk opt to recycle the same very bad music, which seems to border on a joke.... with such bands as Dans Dans Lisa, and Jack Parrow, who dont just get aired but almost become the poster face of the channel.

As people have said SA has bands, with the same potential as any other place, sadly most of them are not pushed or cricized enough into being something decent, they can simply make a dumb cover of an old classic, put some fake drums and synths behind t, autotune the voice, add a stupid video and ...... wait thats MK

I suppose one of the enigmas of Hard/Rock and Heavy Metal is it's ability to be huge without being mainstream.
Thus it's exclusion from chanels such as MK makes sense in this light.
We don't have DSTV at home, so I had never seen MK until we went to Joburg to see Rammstein. I watched a couple of songs late that night, and was, quite frankly, disturbed.
Shallow, repetitive garbage, IMO.

IceCreamMan

reckon we should organise a lynch mob ...while we at it ..lynch that bastard van Coke too ...

wtf

Is MTV any better? Mostly its pop music isn't it? (I also don't have DSTV...)
In SA Jack Parrow is our 'pop'...

Remember I am always coming from a Metal perspective, but you are right, MTV has also gone downhill.
My Dad has some MTV video tape from the early '90's of a 2hr regular clip called 'HeadBangers Ball' totally dedicated to metal, as far as I know that does not happen any more either.

guidothepimmp

they do have it.

not in sa though.

my cousin subscribes to european mtv.. he lives in portugal and i can assure you that at least half the day they play rock and metal.. including headbangers ball..

??

MTV was downhill from the start, dont be eluded to it ever being for music, its as fake as they come.....
MK could have been or could be a bigger musical tool, promoting what its already playing but also broadening itself, and not trying to be a poor mans MTV rip off....
Hammeron, have you ever heard of Kerrang??? You would love it, its 24hours of your music........ live and music videos......
