make and do: Gear

make-and-do

Okay so I'm bored - and I see people are disclosing gear today (nice new guitar Tonedef) ...so here goes - happy perving:

My 1997/98 USA Jazzmaster. I'm sure Mika will appreciate it ?
Great action and attack. Not always sure my dodgy playing deserves such a nice guitar :-[

My trusty VOX AC15

My trusty Japanese drummer, Amatayoshi (aka as DR Rhythm), who never complains or misses a beat, or uses tom rolls.
The amp he lays his beats through is an old, half wasted valve amp.
Doesn't have any branding or model number or anything on it. Probably from the 70's.
Sounds nice though. Treats guitar nicely too.

My sadass pedalboard. I had a bit of a duel with SARS recently, and lost. And had to sell all my cool pedals.....so now
I'm left with a bunch of Boss pedals. Need to get a decent Fuzz/Overdrive sometime in the near future.

Still. Awesome kit. Love the guitar of course. Pure beauty. Naturally distressed (the best kind). And the amps are beautiful, including the funky one.

Tonedef

The best thing about percussion boxes is that, unlike the real thing, they never want to bang your sister!

That guitar is really pretty, I love the colour and shape... reminds me of a crashing wave.

Do you wear one of these?

Yes I forgot to put that in - Won't bang your sister/wife/[insert].
And never late for rehearsals.

MIKA-the-better-one

thats one sweet jazzmaster, in an awsome color.... where did you get it from? The more I play my jazzmaster the harder I find it to play any other guitar, it really does just sit right with me...... And it must sound great through the ac15......

make-and-do

Thanks, ye it's a really sweet guitar. Plays very easily - does make other guitars feel weird/uncomfortable in comparison (love the shape and feel).
I think the colour is supposed to be a custom colour, not sure.
Sounds AWEsome through the AC15. Used to have a VOXAD50VT, which sounded nice as well, but can really see what all the valve fuss is about now.
The AC15 is pretty much the sound I've been after in my head all along.

I found it at Musiekwêreld in good old Bellville. Was looking for a jaguar/jazzmaster or mustang and got a tipp-off from Gerald Clarke that
there was a JM at Musiekwêreld. Traded an old Ibanez ATK bass in and paid the rest in cash. Haven't looked back since.
Having a decent guitar really does make a difference to one's playing and urge to play regularly.

Would still love to try a shortscale like a jaguar/mustang some time.

MIKA-the-better-one

I have had both mustangs, jags, teles, strats.... and Jazzmaster feels the best to me....... Through ac30 or 15 in your case it cuts that slight treble bite that JM's have sometimes... not to say my jazzmaster does not sound killer through my bassman.....

I really want to invest in another Jazzmaster, so I have 2 live. Having a strat as a backup scares me because I know it wont be as cool sounding ☹
And the ac15 does look so nifty and portable compared to my setup... and ac30 seems nifty and portable still compared ot my gear.....
what gauge do you use on the JM

make-and-do

The JM and AC15 combo works really well for me. And must say the original pickups on the guitar sound really good.
Mostly use the inbetween bridge and neck setting and sometimes neck for extra bass crunch. The rhythm switch
works nicely for more percussive stuff.

I've got 11's on. As I found the bridge rattles with lighter strings (as is apparently the case with JM's after lots of research on the web).
Haven't tried flatwounds yet though - which they're apparently made for. Have you tried 'em?
Might invest in one of those custom bridges at some point (www.masterybridge.com/order.html).
Although I haven't really had trouble since putting the 11's on. Apparently heavier strings give you more
sustain as well, which I definitely felt after changing. Killed my fingers in beginning but used to it now.
Love the tremelo! Stays in tune really well.

You guys planning on doing any shows down in Cape Town?

MIKA-the-better-one

yeh I also use 11's and it sounds great with them....... Mastery bridge is also a great option, on my JM it has a gibson style bridge, crazy weird but it works great.

I want to play in Cape Town, but there is little chance we will make enough money to do it..... So Splashy is the closest we will go as far as I can see........ We have places to stay in CPT, but our booking agent says he cant ensure enough to cover travel etc......

Up here in jhb they have the thurston moore and lee ronaldo jazzmasters........ they are so great, but Music connection wants...... 23k cash for one.... which is a rip off

make-and-do

Ye and Cape Town crowds are notoriously uncommitted gig wise.
So you probably would make a loss. Sad.

Would love to see the Moore and Ronaldo signature models. Can't say I've seen them this side.
23K is a tad overpriced! At least you have access to cheaper options in the States ☹

MIKA-the-better-one

dude, when i hit the US, I am getting in order...... VOX ac30------ Fender Vobrolux-------- Thurston moore signature JM--------- then maybe a small amp

Things are way cheaper there.... ontop of that ile be earning a bit more than here... so fingers crossed.....

josh

Its good to see a VOX AC15 or 30!! They really are wonderful amps ?

FruitarGeek

I like your pedalboard!

Why you ask: well if you look at it, its like stairs ascending. Each pedal is slightly higher than the next one. That stuff messes with you mentally.

Great gear tho, I am envious.

make-and-do

Yip, it's a magical pedalboard. The reverb pedal is actually hovering above the board ?

Thanks, I reckon this setup will do for now....although I see there's a 1966 Mustang for sale on gumtree. Drool.

inflames

Great looking gear!
Love the Jazzmaster!

Thanks for the compliment!
Was wondering how many people have (or like) JM's here on GFSA. Apart from Mika's obscene collection I
haven't really spotted any other...
