Do You do Martial Arts?

Just out of interest, what martial arts do you do? A lot of guitarists are computer geeks as well and I was wondering what other commonalities there might be. I mean, if you're awesome enough to play the guitar, surely you're also awesome by being into your martial arts, right? ? I did karate as a kid (primary school, for just over year, got to orange belt or second orange, don't recall) Then I did tai chi as a young adult, for just over a year. Was awesome and I intend on going back. And now we (wifey and me) are doing Capoeira. It's by far my favourite physical thing I've ever done. Much more demanding than karate (or maybe it feels more demanding coz I'm less fit now than I was when I did karate) but also a lot more fun. I'm enjoying the natural movements as opposed to the structure in karate. I intend on doing JKD along with my Capoeira, but struggling to find a teacher in PTA/Centurion. And... importantly... am I worried about damaging my hands and not being able to play guitar? Not with Capoeira but with JKD (or Wing Chun), yes. So I guess I'll just have to be super careful. Over to you ?

@Singe, best shape I had ever been in my life was last year boxing.. Even compared to when I was invited to Korea when I was 16 for tkd. Now I am taking up squash, with my left hand nogals! Haha ?

yup did karate for 13 yrs. 12 in jka and1 in tae kwon do

got to 2nd dan. made western province but didnt quite get to represent rsa.

did come 4 th in sa champs though in my weight cat once..

Quite excited... Tanya and I started Jeet Kune Do this week with Master Pano, a 2nd-generation JKD instructor, with certificate to prove it. But better than his certificate is his 1-inch punch which I felt THROUGH a punching pad thingy and it still just about completely winded me!

We've started off with basic stances and basic shifting movements as well as body conditioning (some of the hardest stuff I've had to do) and a tiny bit of Wing Chun to practise at home to begin with.

Today we did an awesome forearm exercise which you can basically do with a brick, sawn broomstick and rope. Tie the brick to the stick using rope but tie it so that you can roll the broomstick to "wind" the rope, thereby lifting the brick. You wind it by holding the stick with your palms facing down and then turning your fists forwards (like releasing the gas on a bike). You wind it up all the way, and then let it slide down and repeat until you can't any more.

I'm telling you, my forearms felt like hard-wood after a few of those - I've never felt anything like it. But ja, we mixed that up with a bunch of other super-effective stuff and we can feel the pain! Heheh, loving it though!

My favourite part is experiencing the power that Pano generates from a stand-still position. With just a very slight motion, he's able to just about debilitate my arm. (JKD blocks are very powerful.) I'm a big fan of doing a LOT with a little. 20/80 and all that ?

If anyone wants to join us in Pretoria, let me know. I'm specifically trying to get 4-6 people to train in Lynnwood or Centurion as Montana is a bit far to drive to twice a week.

Interesting thread! Did Goju-Ryu and chess as a kid, then the powerful western martial art of "rugby" in high school (two finger dislocations in one match was a record)... then tai chi in NY, practising in Prospect Park brought out the showman in me. Maybe Salsa next ?

I have trained in Mma and Jiu-Jitsu for a couple of years and have competed in amateur tournaments. In our Mma course we did a lot of self defence as well, our head instructor also works with the National Defence Force on hand to hand combat.

Recently however, since after my appendicitis in December I'm having a hard time getting to myself to exercise regularly. It's just not there anymore.

I used to do JKA karate when at school and got my junior black. Sadly, I didn't continue and never got my 1st dan. I made a brief attempt to continue in my first year at varsity, but that didn't last long. I doubt whether I would have continued though, because of the hand injuries as others have mentioned. Such an injury would kill my career and guitar playing...

Oh boy, here goes. I was the co founder of No Holds Barred South Africa and the House of Pain MMA Gym Head Coach. I’ve been involved in martial arts for 30 years now, and have coached some of the very best mma fighters in the country. I started Judo when I was 5 (4th Dan now) have been doing amateur Freestlye & Greco-roman & submission wrestling since I was about 8. Qualified Mauythai instructor and I have my 1st dan in kickboxing and am the first and only South African on the Global Black Belt Society. Started Vale Tudo and Brazilian Jits about 8 years ago and am a purple belt. So yeah, been doing it for a while ?
