He wasn't opposed by democracy. He helped to overthrow a despot. Good on him for that, but then he became the thing that he fought against.
It's bit like the closing scene in Animal Farm where it starts to get hard to tell the difference between the pigs and the humans.
Now what you have to ask yourself is this: Would Bootsy have shot all those people?
