Music in the room
lindsmuse
I love it when someone can bring music into a room like this. There's no fuss or frills, - just the music. I don't know much about Anais Mitchell but she seems to be one of THE modern female folk vocalists around. (I like my music raw not cooked!)

? she's amazing ......... i too love simple live as you said "uncooked" music . the ability to entertain a room with no frills /machines/ gimicks /effects just raw talent ....... gets my vote too

Irritates me a little the way American singer-songwriters jump on the wave of the moment. The child-like voice and fantasy-esque lyrics are borrowed directly from Joanna Newsom. Just more mainstream and sans harp. This is where it comes from:

Oh Ok. I was wondering where Anais Mitchell popped out of - so it seems there's this way of singing going around out there ... stylised, almost acted. But with that Anais Mitchell thing - I must confess I sometimes find her a bit over produced - but this clip was quite interesting because even if it is stylised etc somehow it still zings! So I guess she's just a good musician ...

I think that vocal style really goes back to Vashti Bunyan. She's a bit like Nick Drake in that she sunk without a trace in her own time & then became influential a couple of generations later. Bunyan & the ISB are key influences on artists like Newsom & Devandra Bernhart.
A key difference to Drake is that Bunyan is still alive.
I don't think it's a case of the yanks taking credit for somebody else's style. Influences tend to get around.

yet oddly enough - Joanna Newsom's first release was n 2004
Anais Mitchells first release was in 2002....
so Anais must be phenomenal to copy someone who debuts 2 years later.. ???

Can't help but remind me of Regina Spektor (huge fan here ?)
