I weep for some musicians

Last night I had the great oppurtunity at a show, to borrow a Vox ac30 HW (older edition)
I was so excited to try this out with my gear. SO I got straight into trying ot make it sound great.
Now as I know Ac30's a little bit, and I know my sound quite well, I ended up putting the top bost channel up to about 2/3 volume
So it was a little crunchy clean...... Just the way I like it
I played my show (we play notoriously loud) but it was infact not as loud as when i use my bassman

Now When the next 2 bands got on, they proceeded to freak out that I had my amp so loud and they couldnt beleive I did that (actually they said that to both of us guitarists)
They then went on to use the amps, and I noticed they set them to, about 1/5 of the volume, so what proceeded was a very thin/ crap sound.
May I add they were supposed to be rock n roll bands however there was no hint of that in there setup or sound

Lastr band got on, and guess what they cranked the amps, and it sounded GREAT........ But really now, there is a issue here......

I get that same feeling whenever I see an old tannie hunched over the steering wheel of a Porche 911.

I agree with you man. Some people truely just don't make sense to me. I try to avoid making it my job to educate these people, but often when I try and help, I get the ignorant, "yea sure :-\"

Those Voxes shouldn't even have a master volume. They sound so great when just controling the gain/preamp vol.

This morning I saw a soccer-mom with kids driving a Porsche panamera (that new 4-door behemoth they call a compact sports saloon or whatever marketing crap they came up with). Very weird (useless?) car and quite a strange sight to see it cruising through the pothole hills of Melville ???

For me there is a groove volume... a certain volume level for us to groove at. Generally it's loud. Yep.

For me it has more to do with filling the room than loudness/volume.

I enjoy live shows where you can sit anywhere and hear every instrument, but not be deafened by the loudness/volume.

Perhaps we are talking about the same thing? I also think the volume should be loud enough for the band members to "interact" with each other through the sound - you don't want the bass player to sound like a shower radio or the drummer like a thunder storm - the music should be a conversation between players and not a slideshow

This right here! ? Even when listening to music there is a certain volume level you hit where the speakers just push that little bit extra and it hits you just right 8)

Mike, your post is subjective. By thin/crap sound, do you mean the sound was uncharacteristic of an AC30?
Secondly, before we get all emo, where can i get some of your music. I'd like to form of an opinion of it.

By thin/ crap, I meant it was uncharacteristic of good tone, it was harsh, and generally very life less.
With the band I am in now, I generally prefer to be ridiculously loud, than to be a comfortable volume, infact I ask the engneer to make it uncomfortably loud. I do that because I think ti suits the music.

Either way the way to run a Ac30 is above half on the volume of else its going to not have enough saturation. So often I find engineers and musicians he are so intent on heling the engineer get his sound, but sadly the engineer is not the artist, thus his job i would say is to cater to the band, and the sound they want.... Hopefully a band is good enough to know what it wants, needs and how to do it. I beleive I do....

Tings is not that small...... I have cranked up my bassman there, and will be this saturday again.....

Every 6 weeks I reload my portable music player with new music because I get sick of Dave Martone or Bumblefoot, Guthrie Govan, Davis Gilmour, SRV, Clapton, Jimi, Pete Green but one strange little ditty never gets erased, you might know it, it's called Flying under water.

Mika, an AC30 and single coil PUP guitars could be problematic to get a decent sound ito live modern rock music ...for this set-up you need high volumes and even then you will sound thinnish so to speak....An AC30 sounds best when it's driven by a humbucker equipt guitar...then you don't have to go past 5/6 volume (mic'd-up) to get some early break-up on the TB channel. Anyway, next time you use an AC30, use the Normal channel instead at say 5/6 and use your guitar's tone control to get the treble to your liking...the result may be way better I think.

I have used ac30's a few times, and I love the sound, and i love the results with them.......
I dont really like full blown crunch just that perfect breakup...... I am not really a muhbuggy sorta guy
I recorded my first album with a ac50 pretty much and got great sounds.

Its the other bands who used humbuckers and singles and just did not know how to setup an amp, They did the same with fender amps, just didnt crank them enough to get good tone, it was brittle
