Are these guitars still the Top 10?

In December 2000, Guitarist magazine published an article entitled "The 10 greatest electric guitars in the world Ever" :- 10. Rickenbacker 360/12 - introduced 1964 9. Gretsch Chet Atkins - introduced 1954 8. Ibanez RG550 - introduced 1987 7. PRS McCarty - introduced 1994 6. Gibson Flying V - introduced 1958 5. Gibson SG - introduced 1961 4. Fender Telecaster - introduced 1950 3. Gibson ES335 - introduced 1958 2. Gibson Les Paul - introduced 1952 (no fake Gibsons here,,,,,,,,,, ?) 1. Fender Stratocaster - introduced 1954 Interesting to note that the 50's and 60's seemed to be great years for guitar innovation and most of these brands and models are still alive and well 60 years later. Some of the 'outsiders' were Fender Jazzmaster/Jaguar, Music Man Silhouette, Yamaha SG2000 and a couple of other Gibson semi-acoustics. G&L never featured at all... Do you think this list is still relevant today? I don't necessarily agree with no.10 (not a huge fan of 12 string electrics) & No.9,,, I think G&L should've had a deserving spot in the top 10 and possibly the Music Man Silhouette..... Mika the better one would probably argue that the Jazzmaster/Jaguar should've featured somewhere.. ? what do you think? Are there any other really good guitar brands not listed here that you feel should knock some of these off the list? AND do you agree with the No.1 & No.2 spots?

Just remember that the SA acacias and Australian acacias are in fact 2 completely different groups, this has been a debate for a while now and SA's acacias will be receiving a new genus name if it hasn't already, what happened is when the two groups were discovered they were both allocated by accident the same name, and it became apparent that they aren't related with the newish dna testing methods, and after tracking the records, found that Australia's group name was registered before SA's, therefore our old doringbome aren't acacias anymore.

Also, a lot of our "acacias" are too soft a wood for any use except burning... Witch is resulting in large parts of our country only consisting of juvenile trees. What is worth looking into is actually some of Australia's gumtree (eucalyptus) related trees. Here in SA you see mainly the fast growing species used for paper pulp, but some of the other species like Red Iron Bark (pink saligna) and Black Iron Bark are slow growers that produces quality hardwoods, but they need to go through slow or expensive drying techniques to prevent cracking, and they're quite expensive as well, being popular furniture woods with purdy grains.

So I guess we'll see companies starting to experiment with these woods as soon as the traditional ones aren't profitable anymore, or just use synthetic stuff like in the Steinbergers.

If you define popularity in terms of sales, then a bunch of cheapy crappo guitars are going to make the list. But I reckon the original list is a pretty good representation of what people aspire to own - if you group them in broad categories and don't go into the details of each model.

If you went with most innovative, the Bigsby Merle Travis guitar would have to top the list, since it was the first designed-from-the-ground-up electric guitar with two pickups, a solid body, and a vibrato unit. Every other solid electric is just a variation on that theme. Only the details have changed.

Also that Peavey T-60 thing for being the first ever machine built guitar ?

This list was drawn up by the editor - Neville Martin, deputy editor - Roger Newell and reviews editor - Dave Burrlock and it was essentially a Christmas wishlist to Santa,,,they took into account a handful of classics that stood out both as highly efficient musical tools and virtual cultural icons. It was an old-versus-new dilemma, not to mention personal favouritism. So yes there will be debates and arguments for and against this list. ?
