Complaints duly noted by everyone. I have no problem with negative posts. Inspires more thought than most. And this is most assuredly about personal opinion. Especially since most guitar players mentioned here will be technically excellent players who deserve admiration for their skills.

Mine's Eric Johnson. Amazingly skilled player, and not a shredder for shred's sake, but for all that he bores the heck out of me. I'd rather listen to Johnny Ramone play three power chords over and over.

I highly dislike Malmsteen. I think absolutely everything he makes just sounds the same, his tone is horrendous and his answer to everything is to just play a million notes a second. There are one or two songs that i do like though.

I find most guitarists who "show off" a bit tedious, and you often get comments from bystanding plebians "he is so good at guitar hey"
I prefer a guitarist who does his job and a good job and does not need to be a cock rock about it.

Dan Patlansky, yeh he has some skill, but he pretty much sounds like he is just ripping off hendrix (straight ripping off) I dont think he has much to offer in the way of good music, the way hendrix did it......

I dont think its negative to discuss this sort of thing, I think its kind of a cleaning process which allows us to remove ourselves from the mess we stew in..... Thats how you get a good industry, you critically cull things off........

Sure, for some, but not me, I steer clear of negativity if I can... it seems to stifle my creativity and productivity.

I dont really care about no literature...... but Michael Jordan a good basketball player :0 no no no SPace Jam made him look good, but truthfully he could not even take on bugs bunny at one on one

I think that there is a sort of separation between a guitar player and their music, in a lot of cases.

There are lots of shred players and fusion players who I think are absolutely amazing as guitarists, but the actual music that they record doesn't hold my interest. It's interesting at first for the "gee whiz" factor but that's about it.

Satch is maybe a good example for me: My favourite tunes of his are "Always With You, Always With Me", "Love Thing" and "Rubina". They're all slowish ballads with great melodies and not much technical flash. His other stuff like "Satch Boogie" and "Mystical Potatoe Head Groove Thing" are interesting for the first 30 seconds before they become a wank-fest.

Vai is in a similar boat: he has released tons of stuff that is certainly very interesting to listen to, but not particularly enjoyable, really. Not to hear repeatedly, at least. Interesting that "For the Love of God", arguably his most popular piece, is chock full of long, sustained bends (a la Gary Moore) and is based on a pretty simple hook.

However, there is no denying that they're two of the greatest players in the world, and have been for a long time. They could probably play anything at all that you put in front of them, and play it brilliantly and with authenticity.

I'm as opinionated as the next man (at least), but I don't see why an opinion has to be respected. People should have the right to opinions and, I believe, not shy away from having them, but that doesn't make any given opinion worth anything. People now a days are increasingly fond of spouting the most execrable bilge and then adding "in my opinion" as if that somehow makes it worth something.

Opinions are things that can't be proven - possibly about matters where there is no "truth" (EG who is the greatest guitarist on earth). If they could be proven they wouldn't be opinions they would be facts.

I don't care if people disagree with me on the Shakespeare thing, that's their prerogative. That wasn't the point I was getting at when I mentioned Shakespeare.

You might care to read Paul Johnson's book Creators. He makes a fair fist of demonstrating that Shakespeare is the greatest embodiment of human creativity and, for good measure, that Hamlet is the greatest human creation of all.
