Can anyone recommend a cheap or even better free software program that I can use to record some of my guitar stuff. I kinda want to play and record a melody and then practice some lead stuff with it.

Alternatively you could buy a recorder like one of the Boss BR series...

If you do download audacity, download the 1.3.12 beta version, it actually pretty stable!

Its also not that difficult to use!
I use it quite a bit to edit songs! very easy!

+1 to Audacity! I haven't tried reaper, but audacity is cool!
