So there was some good stuff on display.
First up was singer/songwriter/guitarist "Janis". I'd seen her before at TJs. She did a set of covers - mostly Tracy Chapman (clearly a major influence) and Rodriguez. She's better when she does her own stuff and I wish she'd do more of it.
Then we got Mike Burger (excellent fingerstyle player) and Richard Bruyns (lap steel). They were a little loose early on but finished strongly. They also included a lovely moody piece with lots of reverb on Richard's lap steel.
Then Them Particles. I've seen this band in various permutations. This time they operated as a trio - guitar, lap steel, accordion. They delivered a very strong set, with lots of nods towards that pre-WW2 cabaret sound that Tom Waits also borrows from. Dark material, with Dax Butler (guitar, lead vocals and songwriter) getting into character for each song. His delivery was excellent, and Them Particles are getting better and better at not overplaying.
Terence Reis was up next. I'd seen him before at Andy's with a very good band (including Graeme Currie, Alistair Coakley and Kate Normington). This time he did a solo set. Nice fingerstyle playing, good use of dynamics. Unless Andy was milking some weird joke to death Dire Straits are busy reforming and Terence (who has a base in London) will be the 2nd guitarist. You heard it here first.
The last act was Two Fold. We didn't stay. They had been discourteous to the people sitting around them and to the other acts by having animated conversations through all the other sets - this when they'd moved themselves and their equally inconsiderate fans right into the front row. I didn't feel like giving them the courtesy that they didn't give to anybody else.
