YOUR sound. How did you know?

Or when? That "THIS SOUND" is what you wanted? That that was your sound? And how did you go about acquiring equipment to get it? Did you buy kit specifically to get that sound, or did you stumble across it? I mean, it's all very subjective, of course, but it seems like a strange sort of cusp to arrive at, one that I don't fully grasp yet. If something sounds nice to me, it's nice. I can tell when I don't particularly like a certain tone or effect, but that doesn't tell me anything about MY sound, if such a thing will ever come into being at some point. For instance, I know I don't like the strat on it's bridge-only pickup setting. It sounds reedy and thin to me. Does that mean "my" sound is warmer and fatter? As a corollary to what MikeM posted elswhere, how do you know you're a Marshall or Vox or Peavy man? A Strat/Tele/Les Paul/whatever man? And how often do the looks/reputation/image cachet of the equipment colour your decisions in these matters? I'm not sure how easy or hard this question is to answer... so any insights would be appreciated.

My parameters for 'my sound' are that it shouldn't suck (too much.) So it's pretty easy to satisfy. I'm usually more concerned about playing some notes that don't actually suck (too much) either.

That's not as flippant as it sounds. Play the thing, do the best with what you have, put in the hours. It's simple. (But not easy hehe.)

Without getting too deeply into it, I came across a sound which I thought was really awesome. Those who know of Warlock's "All We Are" will know what I'm talking about. No screaming harmonics; just decent, fat crunch in the rhythm and some gain in the solos.

I also stumbled upon my equipment to give me my desired sound. I've owned my Epiphone FAT-210 since I started out on guitar, so it's a pretty cheap guitar (but good quality!). Then I was recently in the market for a Valve amp, and found a guy selling a Peavey ValveKing 112 for a bargain. I went, I played, I bought... Simple as that. Just fell in love with the sound. No pedals do this combination justice, I just guitar and amp.

Played a valveking the other day (when buying a class 5...) and was blown away as well! The amp SINGS those hi notes with hi gain!!! and the clean is clear too! Made me want it so bad...haha
