So we have some updates. After deciding to go ahead and sort the front side, I marked out everything on paper and pulled out the clamps and was two short, so I decided to call in the bench vice as well as one of my spare door clamps that I had lying around. The wood was wet and a decent amount of wood glue used and then the front was set in place.
I then started on the neck as I want to build it up a bit more to see if I can get the longer headstock like the Gibson. I started with a spare peice of junkwood to get the cut right. This was about 20 minutes of shaving and test fitting and the fit is almost perfect. I'm not too phased about the strength on this item as it's not load bearing, but it will still be attached with wood pins into the headstock.
I used to pencil lines to line up everything and so far, I'm pretty happy with the work that's been done.
I initially thought that I could trim down the headstock and it would look the same, but with the extra length on the Gibson headstock, it's gonna look out of place. So I'm going to build it up, shave it down and then extend it a bit..........that way the Garysan script will fit on without looking squashed in.
Coming this weekend is the final work on the headstock as well as planing down the front of the guitar and then some sanding on the body. Also if time allows......Bleach the black wood grain and get this guitar ready for finishing.
Just to refresh, this is what I'm going for...........sleeker than the Hamer headstock and a bit longer. Overall I need about another 20mm built onto the headstock, so the final peice will actually curve around the headstock, it will be VERY interesting to clamp that sucker down.
I am currently thinking of taking this time to do a re-fret on the neck and then also give the fretboard a thin skim as it's showing signs of severe use. Still thinking about it though.
