This is actually quite interesting. How does SAMRO know which songs are played and thus which composers to pay? Are the venues required to submit song lists?
In reality the venues (bars restaurant and clubs) pay a fixed monthly fee to SAMRO you just staking your claim with SAMRO to a very small portion of that fee.
but you only get royalties for your own compositions if the restaurant or club actually pays samro and many don't.
In cape town SAMRO will come knocking on your window if you so much as eat a sandwich and play music in your car. I know of restaurant and factory owners down here that have fallen foul of SAMRO and ended up in court. While in Joburg A major professional dance company asked if they could use my music for a production. I contacted SAMRO to collect royalties and they told me the the dance company was not registered with SAMRO so I would have to collect myself ? ??? ??? ???
