May I ask, why Cash Crusaders? I would have thought something so obviously specialised would be sold through a dedicated dealer, or privately? CC give you about 10% of what they sell it for...
We all know stories of guitars that have been in a family for years, were disposed of for what somebody thought was a tidy sum and turned out to be a rare, very valuable Martin or Gibson. Not so long ago I had the not entirely pleasant experience of seeing a Marc Maingard 10-string (complete with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides) that somebody had found lying around and had converted into a lamp.
There are people who have guitars (or antiques) that they don't know the true value of.
So it is possible that somebody walked into CC, got 2k for this guitar and the moment they were out the shop the proprietor threw a party and started imagining a large profit.
It's also possible that somebody walked into CC with something he knew to be a dud, talked the shop into giving him 5 grand and walked out rejoicing that there is one born every minute.
We don't know. It looks dodgy, but who knows really? Much better to do as Joel did and go and have a look. Point out to the sellers the various problems and mention that all of this will cost money to remedy. That's if you feel you might want it if the price came down. Also look for and jot down the serial number and mail Gibson to see if anything with that number ever left their factory and what shape and colour it was.
