i know this is a really weird question but who uses the phase effect? would you say it's a nice effect to use?what type of music does it suite?can anyone maybe point out some songs that use it and where in the songs(i know eddie van halen used it)?like i say it's a weird question so don't bite my head off :-[

Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower and David Gilmour all used the Univibe which was a Phaser designed to emulate to sound of a guitar being run through a Leslie rotating speaker. Robin Trower's album "Bridge Of Sighs" has Univibe all over it and is an absolutely phenomenal album (in fact I'm going to put the CD on now). Track down a copy, you can also search for videos of "Bridge Of Sighs" on youtube.

The modern classic phasers are:
The MXR Phase 90 (or 100) ,
the EHX Small Stone,
the MuTron BiPhase and
the BOSS Super Phaser - these are the ones to check out ! From very subtle (vrs guitar parts to Live "Turn My Head" - more Phase 90ish) to very warbly with a fast rate (speed).
4 Slow swooshy w/fuzz - Pumpkins on Gish/Siamese Dream.
Etc etc ...
(Late - too much boos)

ok cool guys thanks alot...
i'll check it out,i'm still deciding if i even need a phaser pedal ?
AlanRatcliffe
I was thinking Gilmour too, 'specially the early stuff, but a Univibe is fairly unique as phasers go.
Queen's Keep Yourself Alive is another good example - the distorted rhythm.

i'm more looking to use it for outros or maybe to add different dynamics to songs,etc...would you say a phaser is worth while getting?i'm not that big on effects,my ideal set up is overdrive, wah and noise gate, but i'm looking to maybe include a phaser into that...
AlanRatcliffe
would you say a phaser is worth while getting?
Absolutely! Nice for spacey stuff, to make "jet noises", add some sparkle to clean guitar and to generally add movement. Probably fourth on my list of essential effects (after overdrive, delay and another delay ?).
Martyr
lol,ok cool...well i'll put it on my ever growing list of things i want for my guitar ???
imagine putting 2 delays together ?
andrewjbryson
my list of essentail effects
1.tape delay
2.analog delay
3.delay
4.delay
5.reverb
6.overdrive
7.chorus
8. chopper / tremelo
9. reverse
10. delay
Martyr
so what both of you are basically saying is if you owned any pedal it'd be a delay pedal? 8)
andrewjbryson
i cant play electric guitar without DELAY
its just a bad habit ....
but I believe that out of all the effects , DELAY offers the most options
AlanRatcliffe
Absolutely! If I was only allowed one effect it would be a delay. I've been known to use up to five simultaneously so that I could do things like pan the repeats (the days before auto-panners). That could have something to do with why I prefer software to pedals...
Essential for me is the ability to have two single-shot delays time synced to different note values.
andrewjbryson
Exactly!
The most common plugin I use is Cubase's very own Double Delay
And then sync them stereo 1/2 and 1/4
this use of delayed syncronization creates some magical overtones (when tones combine...)
NorioDS
I LOVE delay. Like Andrew said, can't play guitar without it. It sounds too "dry" without a little delay. Mmmmmmmm delay ?

Ah, but one of the many advantages of software is that you can specify the note values and if you change the tempo, the delay values change automatically. Call up your favourite patch for delay and it's already time synced with the project.
I can't remember the last time I've had to crack my book of time/BPM tables or use the delay time calculator.
