This isn't meant to be a "i can play more songs than you" kind of thread, but more of a how many songs can you actually play right through!
(*Or for a newb like me, play along to the original track)
Also, list your favourite 20 songs to play, if you can play more than 20!
SO, start listing!
I'll start:
1. Prime Circle - As long as i am here
2. ATB - Dont Stop
3. The Monkees -Im a believer
4. Staind - Everything changes
5. The Cranberries - Linger
6. Theuns Jordaan - Soos Bloed
7. John Denver - Leaving on a jetplane
8. Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen - Strumming, not arpeggio...
9. Evanescence - Numb
10. James - Laid
11. Bloodhound Gang - Fire Water Burn
12. Jakkie Louw - Een Miljoen Woorde
I think thats it, though there might be one or 2 more...
So i think im improving, slowly but surely! ?

I don't feel like thinking of 20 and I somehow doubt I'm allowed to add my bands tracks to the list ? or all the repetitive chord progressions I enjoy improvising over ?
Here are a few I enjoy playing though:
* Neil Zaza - I'm Alright
* Kaki King - Carmine St
* Dream Theater - Afterlife
* Joe Satriani - Midnight
* Mattias Eklundh - Disco Diabolique (Improvised solos though - Which is what he does too)
* Jetblack (It's a jamtrack - you can download it for free from the website recommended)
I seem to end up just jamming things I write most of the time...I used to really enjoy learning other people's songs but I've just found my personal preferences in technique make it very hard to find stuff I'd be good enough to play from beginning to end.

I have a number, but I'm particularly partial to:

my repetoire will be of little interest to the rock fans ......... ?
but my current repetoire .always changes somewhat depending on the gigs .( some demand only original music some want jazz,some instrumental and some require me hiring in a vocalist
for this hotel residency at sun city they just want solo instrumental guitar ( mix of original and jazz) i have all my jazz real books here and can access and play most anything i have music for if requested....... but i've only memorised the most popular 50 jazz songs and my repetoire also consists of 20 original world music compositions from my cd and some new ones so about 70 songs i have memorised and obviously can play on demand and so far it seems to cover all the bases
PeteM
I play a variety of styles from:
Classical pieces like Fernando Sor numbers
Folk like St. James Infirmary
Light jazz ballads like Misty
Rockabilly like That's Alright Mama
Blues like Key To The Highway
Country like Ode To Billy Joe
MOR/Pop like Better Be Home Soon
Latino like Samba Pati
Contemporary like Put Yor Records On
To original stuff in all sorts of genres.
From two and half years ago where I had about 20 numbers I now have a repertoire of about 100 numbers and growing.

Wow... thats A LOT of number to jump to! If i may ask, how did you jump to such a huge number in such a short time?
Just practice? or are there certain techniques or skills you use to remember the songs?

I've retired so I have more time available to me at the moment. I confess that I do use a file with a music stand mainly to refer to when I kinda lose my way and at 64 that kinda happens. ?
Our band religiously practices once a week and I like to take at least two new numbers to each practice to work on. I do remember a lot of them though and the more I play them, the easier it gets. I know that purists will hate the thought that I use a music stand, but frankly I don't care and to date my audiences don't seem to care either. I do a bit of banter/patter between the songs so I also use this for my notes as well.
