I know a few of you want to learn to play at lightning speed. I know I do. Something that has helped me A LOT was metal method dvd! If you know who MAB is.(micheal angelo batio) then you know that he plays unbelievably fast! And If you dont know who he is. Do yourself a favour and go have a look see on youtube.
If you want to learn something that MAB plays I would recomed Tribute to randy. just search google for the tab. If you want a vid of him playing it. Search youtube for mab perfarmance dvd. And if you think a guy that plays 240bpm on as he calls it fast but not fast enough cant play something that has more of a melody then you will see that in the end of the performance dvd on youtube he plays a bit on his dean acoustic.
or if you want to screw with your head.... get dragon force's through the fire and flames tabs. ALso an awesome song that you should see on youtube.
Happy shredding!!

i'm assuming you took out whatever was illegal about the post?because tabs aren't illegal and neither is watching stuff on youtube.....some say tabs are some say tabs aren't,i see it as other musicians interpretations of the song you want.....some guys are just good enough to get the tab 100% the same ?

Filesharing of videos is though ?

Bought speed lives, and tried to learn how to play it, but...

You have to buy the same "Gym Vest", otherwise you wont get those Sweeps right
Willem186
That vest, Im wearing it right now!! ?
Guy-Onraet
Yep, shredding starts and ends at Golds Gym. ?

Learn to play any Death song, maybe Crystal Mountain first (Symbolic), and the shredding will come I promise, then try your hand(pun) at some Pantera... hell yeah... (sorry)...

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I'm looking to import the Metal Method dvd's. Before I order, is there anyone that has used these dvd's successfully? I'm tired of f***ng around with stuff that don't do the job. Thanks :-\

I have MAB's speed kills and it's really lame.
I REALLY recommend John Petrucci - Rock Discipline if you want to build up speed and accuracy. This dvd is awesome. I'm sure there are lots out there.. In my opinion, the original poster of this thread didn't really know what he was talking about. Through fire and flames by dragon force is a classic example of how not to play guitar, its such a mess and sure they can play fast, but slow it down and it sound horrible.

I'm with Guitarboy. I find the MAB videos a bit much.
I also haven't had any experience with Doug Mark's Metal Method.
However, i found John Petrucci's ROck Discipline DVD highly educational.
Another one to consider is Frank Gambale's Chop Builder DVD and the Modes No Mystery DVD.
The last point i wanted to make is that speed is a byproduct of confidence.
If you are 100% comfortable with what you're playing, you can nail it at any speed that your body can handle.

Godda agree with Arjun. I don't own that Frank Gambale's DVD, but i have 2 others of his. His speed picking is pretty good. He does a good job at taking you through finger exercises and stuff.
There was a Guitar Techniques awhile back when Guthrie Govan took one through speed building techniques and patterns, was a GREAT issue. Try find a copy of that. ?

U wanna shred or learn a bit of speed?
Its called a metronome, pick and be merry.
Watching videos about speed is merely eye candy. Rock discipline does the favour of sorting it into sections to make practicing easier. Gambale's teach economy of movement. Joe Stump's dvd teaches how to sound like Yngwie but with bad teeth. Malmsteens dvd's teach you how to sit in front of the screen and not learn anything except the blur technique equivalent to something else teenage boys like doing. Shawn Lane's dvd's teach you about grouping pentatonics into 4, 5, 6, 7 note per click runs for creating unusual lines. Its all an oddball thing. And I think MAB is a tossbag, albeit a fast tossbag.
So if you wanna learn about speed get a metronome and learn string crossing at one note pr string... then two notes per string, then 3 and 4 and 5 per string. It takes time.... a long time. Then you learn string skipping like the very boring Paul Gilbert followed by the uberamazing Nuno Bettencourt. Then after a while you'll have memorised patterns and you include them in your solo's... then one day you click... what if i put this here followed by this instead? And at this point you start thinking that speed is merely one tool in a huge bag of tricks music has.
Then comes the time when you start dissing yourself for all that misspent masturbation on the instrument cos you were misguided into thinking that speed makes you cool, let alone a tool.
METRONOME... good right hand technique (which you learn as time goes on due to realising limitations in your current hand setup) ... then you are gonna be a star. A little one.

i personally love shred cd's ....... great value indeed as they offer "more notes for your money " than any other style
and btw i seriously love steve vai's work so it's not purely a tongue in cheek statement .....thats if the absolute master musician steve vai is seen as 'shred"
evolucian
^... yeah, Vai is seen as shred. One of the original members in the elite club virtuoso. He's good, very... but he gets a bit tiresome eventually. Like most shredders. Richie Kotzen on the otherhand always has these amazing soulful rhythms and kickass vocals to accompany his shredtastic stuff. But he does it in such an arty way that it gets classified as music. His new album is amazing.
I'm not saying Vai isn't music... just saying he bores me. It's like his licks are the same in a way... a lesson he never learned from Zappa I guess...

Yup, Kotzen is amazing. I think its his chops in conjuction with his phrasing that set him apart.
Also, Nuno Bettencourt is highly underrated. The guy has phenomenal acoustic chops as well.
I personally enjoy listening to Vai and wouldn't rate him as boring.
I find a lot of the shred for shred's sake guys tiresome.
+1 on the metronome point Evo. Accuracy, speed and timing all come from having a sense of rhythm first & foremost.
